Hello, starting cultivating tonight
    #1079531 - 11/23/02 04:17 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Hello, I'm going to attempt to start my first shroom growing adventure.  History:  I have worked at a nursery for three summers, so I do have a little bit of horticultural background (and also entitles me to discounts on materials such as perlite, vermlite/ aquarium supplies (its also a pet store))  I got two syringes of PF spores from PF.  Apparently that is the only strain they have at the time, because I wanted one of PF and Hawaiian, but a note inside the box said that PF is all they have.   Allthough the spores got here fairly quickly.  I plan on buying a pressure cooker and some widemouth mason jars to do everything correclty, no short cuts.  I have two questions however.  If I do get mason jars with the metal lid, how should I punch holes into the metal lid?  I remeber trying to put holes in metal with nails before, and it is realy a pain.  What would be the easiest method of punching holes in the lid?  Secondly if I decided to use aluminum foil over the top, how many layers should I put on it?  And would using a rubber band melt in the pressure cooker If I used it to hold the foil in place?  Hoepfully if all materials are gathered up I will prepare several jars tonight.  I'll provide updates as they come.

Best way to punch holes in the lids is with a hammer and a nail. I like doing it on carpet so the nail can go down real easy as opposed to hitting some wood or something. The rubberbands won't melt. Most people only use one layer of foil. I always seem to have problems only using one and when I do I wind up haveing to redo the jars. It's a pain in the ass, so I tripple layer my jars now. They all come out perfect. No way water is getting in with three layers of foil. I cover it from top to bottom, then from bottom to top, the from top to bottom again. It seems excessive, but since I've been doing it all my jars turn out great. Lucky bastards who can do it with one layer. I don't know what I'm doin wrong, but whatever. I get my shrizzles.

I use a drill to make 1/8" holes in the lid. When I used a nail to punch the holes it made sharp burrs on the other side of the lid. And I don't use tin foil at all, I just put duct tape over the holes.

How big are widemouth mason jars? They sound huge. If they're huge, it will take a long time to colonise, you're better off with widemouth 1/2 pint jars.

zeta's right, Im going to use 1/2 pint jars or equivalent, tapered (hopefully) canning jars or glasses, depending on the selection at walmart. I wonder if they have organic brown rice at wally mart? otherwise I may have to wait till I get it

Biglo,
Use a drill for the holes if possible.
3 layers of foil? Nah...1 will work fine and you don't need rubber bands.
Thirdly.....sterize, sterilize.....and sterilize!!!
