Hello,
Alan--nice tip about the telephone poles. Probably won't eat even if active--just curious.
If you have a moment, take a look at my post on Mtopia-- http://forums.mycotopia.net/wild-mushrooming-field-forest/56731-amanita-id-eastern-n-america.html Probably not the most informative/proper ID format, but I hope you can pardon it this once...

Habitat--growing at the base of a telephone pole.
Gills--light orange, close.
Stem--tough, darkening, fibrous.
Cap--3-4 inch diameter. Fairly smooth in center but dry and scaly.
Spores--pending--looks to be orange.
Bruising--hints of green/blue/grey/dark brown at stem break.
Location--NE Ohio.
Smell--sweet, strong smell.
Taste--somewhat bitter, left a slight tingling on the tip of the tongue.
Thanks.

Spores are indeed a rusty orange.

how do you know its not Gymnopilus luteus?
i would not consume it because it was growing off of treated wood.

Good insights vjp. As a matter of fact, I was looking for an ID but failed to make that clear. Also, Alan R. mentioned the treated wood... I hope I can get his (or anyone's) input here to rule out (or in) other species.
Thanks!

Btw, whereas at first this mushroom smelled sweet and stongly of "mushroom," it is now drying and smells like a mixture of urine and decomposing roadkill. Makes sense considering I found it solitary by a sidewalk/road in a suburb.

That is because it is being eaten by bacteria.

Yeah, not pleasant at all.
Alan, are you in agreement then that it is spectabilis/junonius?

I have no idea what this is. The pics aren't that good and its kind of beat up. I guess its probably Gymnopilus due to the texture of the cap.
Even if I had it in my hand, was given excellent habitat shots and checked it out with a microscope, I would still be hesitant to put a species name on it.
