I feel like I'd NEED my computer as a comfort and realty pillar if I were to go hiking or climbing for 7 days. How bout you?

Never if I'm backpacking (duh).. mine is a widescreen gaming laptop that weighs like 17 lbs.. and the battery lasts for like an hour. If I'm car camping though, have a power source etc.. then yeah most likely. Then it's basically a 300gb ipod with good speakers.

So you power it thru the car lighter I assume? Is that a comfortable way to camp btw - as far as bringing your car with you? I have a truck and was thinking of driving to a campsite and setting up a tent right next to it. Never done it before so it'll be a learning experience I'm sure.

It's not really a learning experience... Or do you mean you've never camped period before? camping next to your car is pretty much the easiest way to camp.. only thing easier would be an RV with a bathroom/kitchen.. but I wouldn't really call that camping. Since you aren't really limited by weight and carrying everything on your back.. you can basically bring whatever you want. 100lbs of food and water if you want. And if your tent explodes/gets eaten by rabid alligators/etc.. you have a safe place to sleep.. and a means to travel long distances very rapidly. So yeah... car camping is more comfortable by default. But yeah I just have a power adapter for the cig lighter. Even though I don't have a car right now.
But generally I leave my laptop at home. Nature provides plenty of entertainment. Unless I want a neverending playlist of music.. or to watch movies..

Well if you can call operations camping then yes. More than most folks for sure. Training too we had to do that sort of thing. I think sleeping in a tent would be amazing as long as I can take a crap without feeling like I'm violating someone's insane rules.

Part of going wilderness camping for me, is to get "back to basics" and away from the digital technology which is consuming our lives.
I recommend you try going "without."
Take a book instead.

Blasphemy.
The whole point of camping imo is to get away from all the day to day nonsense.
I guess if I wanted to camp in luxury, I would consider it, but then again mine would also just be a glorified Ipod.

I've never actuallly camped out in an official campsite without restrooms (that I can recall anyway). If squirrels, racoons, snakes, birds, and insects can take a shit I should be able to dig a 1'x1' hole, doo the nasty, and cover it will soil.

Unfortunately it bothers me when there's a rule that doesn't make 100 percent sense.

MANY wilderness campsites have the pack out your poo rule. Too Many..
I for one like camping most when there are bathrooms and showers near base camp. Long hikes can be made from here and a few days worth of camping away from base camp are great but still, getting to base camp where a hot shower waits and cold beer sits is best.
I do like to take a laptop but only for two reasons.. Its nice to upload pics and clear flash cards for the camera and sometimes I do like to watch a movie or two before bed while camping.
No need for me to spend the entire day or week without technology, I get enough of that just camping. Night time is for me and my laptop.

the greatest part about camping is that you can make it whatever you want... you can turn it into your own little world. if you want to bring a laptop, go ahead. Personally, I go camping to escape the confines of the electronic light boxes that I spend all day staring at. Instead of using your computer, look at nature and just sit and enjoy it. That's what I enjoy. But it's totally what you make it.
