AMD vs Intel
    #1079062 - 11/23/02 09:18 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Hi Everyone,
A friend of mine asked me to help her with buying a new computer. Actually she needs 2 of them.

I'm leaning towards two AMD's becuase they're cheaper and the reviews I've read on them I like a little more than Intel.

But, one machine will be running Red Hat Linux and the other will have Window XP Professional.

I'm 99% sure that the Win XP Pro will be fine, but has anyone every had configuration problems while setting up a linux box with an AMD processor? The version of Red Hat will be the newest distro.

Any advice/ideas would be great.

Thanks
Lana

P.S. And another thing, if AMD is your choice, please tell me the name of a good processor, basically one with a fast (best) bus speed.

AMD processors and the parts that are needed to build a system, motherboards, ram, etc are usually cheaper for an AMD system. The shroomery server has 2 AMD 1800+ processors in it...

http://www.pricewatch.com is a good place to look for what prices should be...

$178 - Athlon XP 2400
$139 - Athlon XP 2200
$87 - Athlon XP 2100
$74 - Athlon XP 2000

Unless you just absolutely need THE fastest personal computer out there... AMD is the way to go. RedHat and pretty much every other linux distro should work just fine with them.

Yeah. ALL of my processors are AMD. I'm very anti-Intel. My choice would be an AMD Athlon, the fastest you can get since AMDs operate faster than an Intel at the same speed.

AMD has the better price/speed ratio. If you have money, go for the Intel.

>My choice would be an AMD Athlon, the fastest you can get since AMDs operate faster than an Intel at the same speed.

If you go to tomshardware.com and compare the benchmarks, AMD wins about 1/3 of them, and Intel wins the other 2/3.

Also let's not forget that Intel has just released the Pentium 4 3.06 GhZ with Hyper-Threading Technology. The computer thinks that there's 2 processors, but there's only one. If your running many applications at a time, like big number crunching and memory eating programs, the 3.06 will destroy the P4 3.6 GhZ. You really can't compare single-threaded benchmarks anymore, because your going to be running more than one program at a time so it's not a practical test. Also lets not forget AMD's Athlon XP 2800+ has been delayed yet again. They only about to just release the 2700+.

Why are you 'very anti-Intel'? I've always had good results from them.

AMDs function better on applications that I use them for. Dual AMDs will work a hell of a lot better than dual Intels. And like I said, speed-wise, AMDs tend to run faster than advertised.

Just make sure the app/OS you're using is setup for multithreading. Win98 and such is not as far as i know. Don't know about xp but if its not setup for multithreading its not going to go any faster :/

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

XP can handle multiple processors.

The problem with dual-processor motherboads is that they suck. They for servers and number crunching mainly. Lana never told us what the computers would be used for, so for a gaming machine, a dual-processor motherboad would not be suitable. Lana also never told us the budget for these machines.

>XP can handle multiple processors.
Linux can too.
