Left wing = Liberal
Right Wing = Conservative

That's the simple answer

That whole conservative/liberal thing confuses me too, Supposedly conservatives want less government, and liberals want more government, but conservatives want more laws telling people what they can and cannot do.

In reply to:

Where did you pull that from? I don't see a lot of conservatives trying to tell me what firearms I'm not allowed to own. As far as drugs go the liberals and conservatives agree it should be illegal, so there's really no difference there at all.

Politics for dumbies paraphrased.

Republicans lead the charge for states rights. They want states to enforce environmental regulations, state welfare systems, nursing home standards, medicaid. They favor smaller government that keeps it's hands off of the state, businesses, and individuals. Oppose gun control. Fed government is for foreighn policy and national defense.

They do see a role for the FED government in fostering family values, which they determine to be SEX abstinence, prayer in school, tax supported private school, restriction on abortion and sex education.

Democrats give handouts to the poor, old, disabled. They like the feds intervening and proposing solutions to problems. They don't trust the states to handle it. Gun control, affirmative action, higher taxes.

they don't like the government getting involved in family values, they prefer to leave this to churches and families. oppose prayer in school. pro-choice on abortion.
