How are they looking now?  Just tried this process yesterday with about 10 Weraroa, stems and pouches chopped up finely (stems intact) and have done the same method, but keeping it inside in about 15 degrees and very moist in a plastic container.

Looking forward to seeing how your subs have developed!

well... it was worth a try... haha

I took these photos last friday (31/7/09) and the mushrooms were all covered in mould, which even i could tell was definitely mould.

Also i had been a bit slack/lazy and not checked them for a while the cardboard had begun to dry out a bit, but was still damp between the sheets.

So all in all a failed attempt as far as the resurrection of dried shrooms, still had fun and was quite surprised at how resistant the cardboard has been throughout the process as far as mould is concerned. the mould has not gained a hold on any parts of the cardboard, only left mild spore smudges where it was in direct contact but otherwise nothing else.

This proves how good cardboard could be to begin the growth myc if you had some more freshly picked specimens.

Ok, so ive learnt that dried shrooms are no good to resurrect, but if you have read through some of my earlier posts i showed that i placed a few shroom stubs covered in dirt that looked like they had a bit of dried mycelium in them.

Gave em a go as i had no intention of eating those sandy nugs :P
Here are the results.

Unlike mould shroom mycelium seems to really like fresh cardboard. (notice where one of the stubs have been pulled away when opening)

The difference from mould and shroom myc, very obvious when you know what you are looking at

So the project was not a complete failure  there is still hope  i shall continue the grow; but with a few minor changes.

I have removed all the mouldy bits of card and re positioned the myc stubs on some fresh wet cardboard.

Also to help keep the card moist i am using a 2L milk bottle with a pin prick in it that should save me from hosing down my grow all the time; yet to see how long one full bottle will drip for.

The plan is to get the myc in to a bucket of pine chips as soon as their ready..... not really sure when they will b ready though...? Anyone know how much growth i should wait for before i transfer?

Thanks for the update.  You might want to try a layer of straw over the cardboard first and let the mycelium get a foothold in that.  You might try a search in advanced mycology using my name to get a technique for recovering dry mushroom tissue.  I've pulled it off several times, including with a few tiny dry pieces of tissue sent by a member in AU, which I then grew out, printed the fruits from, and sent him back the fresh prints.  There's a thread on it around here somewhere.

I had similar results in my cardboard trials.  I noticed that after a short time, even with transferring, that the cardboard was always either too dry or two wet, and very difficult to maintain steady moisture even in the terrarium I used.  After a week or two, the cardboard felt slimy so I tossed it.  The mycelium did grow, so I guess it's possible with proper care.  This just puts me another step closer to agar.

yup cardboard is great. I have used it before when I got a syringe of Tasmanian from earthstongue that was contaminated I think. Anyways all 12 of my jars contaminated with some rusty color mold (I think it was lipstick). I put some grains on cardboard soaked microwaved and cooled. I got enough clean culture after 2 transfers to knock up 10 jars.

All very interesting.  I have my attempt at culturing Weraroa NZ a few days old now, have used pieces of fresh flesh (and gills) and a few stubs as well from the bottoms of stems.  I am putting in around 1 cup of water every 36hours, making sure it's kept well damp and moist.

No idea how long it will take to grow, my idea was to get at least something started before the season finished and then learn more as I go along.

Good to see that you have had some positive results. It is not rocket science after all..

This is a picture of some mycelium grown from stem butts and a piece of pine, the mycelium is about 3 weeks old

I have layered this cardboard mycelium in a container with holes drilled in the base and placed it indoors so that it can form a good strong layer before adding wood chips.

Close up of mycelium

I give FAE as much as I can and mist with a hand sprayer when needed. These pictures are a week or two old so I will take new ones and probably start a new thread.

~good luck all  :mushroomgrow:

Fk yeah that myc looks huge! cant wait 4 mine to have some more substantial growth like urs

so at that stage u still waited for more growth before adding it to woodchips...?

have you put them in chips yet? if not can you show me a pic of how much growth you wait for before putting them in chips.

It has two layers, so I just wait until they have joined and things are healthy, then a layer of chips will be placed on top. I will end up making a thread when I can be bothered putting the chips on top, probably in the next few days.

Today i checked the grow i have going, there was still active myc and the 2L milk carton was still keeping the card moist with a minute trickle of water (Not much but still some left in the carton). I have refilled the carton and left it there, will check it every now and then maybe they will survive until next year..... but i doubt it, summer is hot where i live.

I have once again missed the season ;'(

Oh well, until next years hunting :P
