Americans have the luxury of mental illness
    #10782749 -

the other day i was watching Bill Mahers Religilous and he said something pretty cool... He admitted that he thinks it is a luxury to be able to be an atheist. meaning that he wasnt in a foxhole, or dying from cancer or afflicted by anything that would cause him to be only left with hope.

I think the same can be said about mental illness such as depression, anxiety, adhd. These are not real problems when compared to starvation, genocide, rampant disease and rape. I think it is a luxury to be able to sit around and whine about how your life doesnt compare to the movie stars you see on television. It is a luxury (and a curse) to be able to be so self absorbed that you can sit around all day being completely introspective and subjective about your life.

if you look at a list of the countries with the most reported cases of mental illness, I will bet you that those are the most well off nations that dont have things like genocide or starvation to worry about.

I concur. While there are some mental conditions I would agree which actually do inhibit people from functioning like a "normal" human..
Shit like ADHD, manic-depressive disorder, chronic anxiety.. blah blah blah. Is just shit they made up to peddle more drugs.
Sorry to anyone whose been convinced they have some kind of brain disorder that they have zero control over, and you need pharms to cope, but it's true.
Yeah depression happens, it's called life. Deal with it

Well off countries don't have higher rates of mental illness. I'm pretty sure well off countries have lower rates. Generally speaking, higher mental/physical stress = higher possibility of mental illness.

I believe that mental illness is not a product of our society, but rather MI is something that has always been there but couldn't be seen because it was the norm, the "illness" and the behaviours that accompanied it weren't that unusual in times of old. It was only after the overall state of misery and risk of death decreased, and some people's behaviour didn't reflect this change, then what was considered normal and abnormal was redefined... leading to some people being "diagnosed" as being "abnormal" to societal expectations and therefore "ill".

But, regardless of whether it is an illness or just some aspect of our humanity that hasn't been able to keep up with a changing environment and society, the people who experience mental illness require and benefit from help from others. It's a situation that won't go away by just believing it didn't exist.

I read somewhere a while ago that a lot of domesticated animals in australia (perhaps other countries also) were behaving in ways indicative of mental  unrest, such as OCD or depression. They were prescribed the appropriate medications

>It is a luxury (and a curse) to be able to be so self absorbed that you can sit around all day being completely introspective and subjective about your life.

It is hard to dispute this, but then again it might be this same 'curse' that helps us to evolve to a new stage of consciousness. I don't think awareness of our problems can exist without the problems, and with awareness comes the possibility for transcendence.

Personally I feel I have made a transition to one of the most stable mindsets (when sober) that I have ever had, and a big part of this was due to the growth that initiated from a very mentally unstable part of my life.

I will agree with idea presented in this thread.

It is because we have the ability to be self absorbed, and industry to finance research into "understanding" (diagnosing to capitalize) mental states - that we have things like ADHD.

I think alot of the mainstream psychological disorders are common, to an extent throughout all times and places.

However, it is only because we as an industrilized, rich and educated society is less preoccupied with basic survival, that big-pharma companies bring these anamoly mindstates to light to profit off people.

I think in less structured societies there would be more variation in what is considered normal.

It comes down to: the more you examine the science of you and compare yourself to others, the more you will find you are abnormal. Our society reinforces this.

2nd and 3rd world countries are too busy surviving.

I really feel the depth of the thread title, because my mom is a walking illness + the extent of her disabilities are certainly excentuated by her privledge (wealth.) - ie. she would have to get off her ass and "deal" with her problems if she wasn't wealthy.

your post makes a lot of sense.
but in reality "mentally ill" people should just "man up" and get on with it. at least they're not getting genocided. tsk:rolleyes:

No, depression and life aren't the same, this is why they have different names and meanings. Anyone who fools themselves into thinking that depression will happen just as a result of being alive is full of shit and probably finding excuses for not dealing with their own depression and lack of will.
Of course people have control over their mood and feelings, this is exactly why depression isn't life, but rather an aspect that can be avoided at one's will, considering that one has the right knowledge to deal with themselves.

Really?
So, with other words, you're saying that rich and educated people are more likely to fall into believing that mental illnesses exist and that they have no power over them?
Have you even checked any statistics on mental health and levels of delusion, and the levels of instruction of people that exhibit more of these traits? From all my research I have found that it is usually the uninstructed people that are more exposed to mental problems and losing control over their own psyche, while the instructed people that are always looking for information and fact-checking are usually more balanced and able to deal with themselves in a constructive manner.

You mean the more you examine yourself from a delusional, paranoid perspective, the more freaked out you become about being mentally insane, right?
Honestly, I can't think of one thing going bad with continuously re-evaluating oneself, as long as this is done without forgetting to make use of one's best judgment. What exactly, in your opinion, is making one think they're being abnormal, when it comes to self-analysis?

If depression, anxiety, and ADHD are what you're defining as mental illness, then you have some semblance of a point.  But I don't care where you're from:  If you've got schizophrenia, you're going to have some problems.

As for depression, Medieval civilization was aware of it, but rather than considering it a mental disease(a concept that hadn't been developed yet), they considered it a sin.  So instead of Prozac, they got condemnation from the church.  I'm sure that was much better for their condition. :smirk:

Because impoverished, third-world countries fraught with genocide, starvation, malnutrition, and lack of scientific understanding don't exactly have the facilities or resources for addressing mental health concerns, perhaps? :smirk:

No reason to pretend that such mental illness is the result from not having any real problems. Not having genocide or starvation is the luxury, but not being mentally ill. I'm sure the depression will clear right up once they are exposed to more trauma and suffering though, right? :hehehe:

ah, so you are saying that third world countries dont have enough psychiatrists to "diagnose" mental illness? I agree.... I have been saying for years on here that the amount of psychiatrists is directly correlated to the amount of people with mental illness :smirk:

actually... yeah. I am absolutely sure that someone who is so depressed that they "cant get out of bed in the morning", when faced with imminent death will scratch and claw just as much as any other "normal" person would. I am saying that when life threatening situations are abundant and staring you in the face, you dont have time to be depressed, or freeze up and have an anxiety attack or ask them to repeat the question "will you renounce your faith" because you were daydreaming and just couldnt pay attention.
do you disagree that in a foxhole, there is such a thing as depression, and adhd? (i left out anxiety because some could claim to be anxious when bullets are whizzing overhead).
do you think that when you are nearly starving to death that you have the time or energy to sigh and say woe is me? im willing to bet you are wondering how to get some food a majority of the time.

that is what I meant that it is a luxury to be able to sit around and complain about how unfair life is, and about how inexplicably fucked up your life is (hint: its only inexplicable because you refuse to confront things in your life)

Im not sure how to respond, but i think you misunderstood what i was trying to say. Maybe i typed it wrong.

I agree that an educated populace has the ability to understand the way their minds work.

i think Television is a reference point of normal, that alot of people compare themselves to.

I too self analyze constantly, and find it very beneficial. However, i think there are alot of gullible people who "buy" into diseases which are marketed to them.

Agreed.
Some people so buy into this stuff, but this doesn't mean that depression, for example, doesn't exist or that it is easy for those who are depressed to get over it. This of course doesn't mean that they will be able to grow out of their depression if they go to a psychiatrist to prescribe them pills, but it isn't like their options are limited or that someone actually comes in the way of their ability to inform themselves to a greater extent about the nature of depression.
To me it's quite clear that those who choose to take antidepressants do it because they find it the most convenient alternative for themselves, and that they probably don't want to resolve anything deeper than an unpleasant symptom.
What I find really funny is that I've heard people saying things like they didn't even know they were depressed until the doctor told them, and now that they're taking medication they're feeling a lot better.  There's a good number of threads like that even in this forum.
Still, even in this case, it is still these people who decided that taking medication is what they prefer, instead of choosing to go to a psychologist, or, even better, solve their own issues.
Everybody gets what they want, it isn't like people who choose antidepressants are being fooled to do it. :shrug2:

Its a funny joke, but without knowing precisely how the numbers were collected regarding the amount of cases of mental illness, I'm only assuming that these numbers would be ascertained from people that are diagnosed as being mentally ill, so it only makes sense that the amount of people recognized as being mentally ill would relate to the amount of individuals who "officially" make that distinction. Third-world countries would, by nature of not being economically developed, not have a diverse enough hierarchy of specialization of tasks for there to be numerous individuals involved in treatment of mental illness, not to mention enough people with enough resources to be able to afford to seek such treatment out, considering the nature of their circumstance in the first place (starvation, suffering, etc.).

I understand, of course, that a lot of mental afflictions develop that are unique to being in a developed country, just the same as people in developed countries don't suffer mental malaise due to experiencing first-hand the ravishes of genocide.
I'm simply proposing that mental illness is frequent everywhere, and that it manifests differently depending on the unique characteristics of the environment.
I also personally suspect that it exists much more prevalently in places in which there is much more struggle and strife, due to the higher intensity and frequency of traumatic experiences.

Quote:

Sure, faced with imminent death in which there are only a limited amount of choices to make that don't result in immediate death, most severely depressed individuals are probably prone to reacting to these circumstances, but why do you think that being in such a traumatic, suffering circumstance is going to resolve the emotional states that they have immersed themselves within previously?
Scratching and clawing for life is certainly different than feeling so negatively emotionally that one doesn't want to get out of bed, but the fact that one is scratching and clawing doesn't mean that one has subsequently been resolved of the mental affliction that was bringing them to choose to stay in bed. Its only a difference of external actions.
You've changed the behavior, perhaps changing the behavior will change the mental experience over time, but typically prolonged starvation and genocide don't clear up mental disorders.

Yes, I do disagree, because its quite possible that people are depressed in extremely traumatic circumstances like that. They might not have time to sit alone and contemplate the depth of their emotional experience, but the fact that someone has to react to tragic circumstances instead of lying in bed alone doesn't mean that they aren't depressed meanwhile. This, I think, is evidenced by the prolonged mental suffering that tends to be common afterwards, when they are no longer in the foxhole and aren't struggling to survive, being shell-shocked, having post-traumatic stress disorder, becoming homeless....

Quote:
that is what I meant that it is a luxury to be able to sit around and complain about how unfair life is, and about how inexplicably fucked up your life is (hint: its only inexplicable because you refuse to confront things in your life)

Of course you're correct regarding the lack of confronting things in one's life, but the fact remains that many individuals simply may not understand the nature of their experience in terms of what is causing it and how to take a path of correcting it. Once again, it is a luxury to not exist in starvation and malnutrition, around genocide and war, but it isn't a luxury to have these negative mental and emotional experiences themselves.
Realizing that they have that luxury could certainly help someone begin to overcome their negative experience, whether or not one wishes to label it depression, but only if that realization actually does occur. Simply hearing someone say as much may or may not bring the realization.
