Re: Shotgun Out of Glass Aquarium [Re: AlexP]

Doc, I would be buying the aquarium. I'm planning of using this table to support the whole shotgun. An aquarium of this size is not cheap.

Thanks a lot guys! There's plenty of great advice here! I guess my best bet would be to go to a company that works with glass and ask them to do it for me. It might not be cheap but the investment is worthed. I don't want to take that many chances with something that will cost me a lot of money if I'm not sure I can do it without breaking it. And I'll have a piece of equipment that will last me forever!

When you drill/make your holes there is some small clamps that have rubber on the clamps that people tighten to support both sides of the glass when drilled so as to not cause cracking, this will probably help when drilling holes so close to each other. Sounds like a cool idea, I'd use glass but I don't have the tools/funds to do such a project. Keep us updated.

I can tell you that local glass shops will not usually guarantee their work when drilling aquariums. If it breaks it breaks is what they usually say.

More great advice! I definitely should practice on some other glass surface, like a goldfish bowl if I want to do it myself. If I do choose to ask the services of a glass shop, then maybe I should ask them to build the whole terrarium for me.

I can tell you this. I got a 150 gallon tank priced out that includes them making it with there own glass it was 500 bucks. I know that you won't need 150 gallon but you can get an idea off that price and that wouldn't include drilling all the holes in it I would think that would cost you more

I just converted it and my shotgun should be anywhere between 80 and 100 gallons. Around 500 euros is the price I'd feel confortable paying for my terrarium. Thanks man!

I love drilling through glass..  I used a copper shank for my printing jars check this out!!

My own little tek on making spore syringes...  Thought about making a tek but not everyone is willing to go this distance for a spore syringe so I decided not to, but here they are!!! Full filter disk lid and a self-healing port on the bottom, just shoot your sterile distilled water in then suck it out!!! I love um.

Dont they sell glass drill bits at homedepot. I remember making bongs out of beer bottles with them. Just keep water running on it and work real slow so you dont put cracks in the glass

Alex, don't waste your money on something that's sure to be a major burden.  Do you have any idea how heavy a 100 gallon aquarium is?  Cleaning it, moving it, even just using it will be a colossal pain in the ass.  Soon after getting it you'll regret it.

Glass aquariums do make for great display units, especially with the built-in natural daylight overhead floros but why not just get a smaller one for your desk and not drill the holes?  Not every terrarium needs to be a shotgun.  In fact, before about 2 years ago, none of them were.  Keep the lid cracked, give it a few manual fannings a day and it'll do fine.

There are very good ideas here! I wanted it to be the nearest possible to perfection as its main purpose would be decorative. I'd love it to be made out of glass and to be perfectly done maybe my only bet is to ask someone who works with glass to do it for me.

just get a standard fish tank and if your after decorative eye pleasing air exchange and humidity build one of these.

then no drilling involved and you can watch your babies grow!

see this pic!!!!
