First Post! FC Recommendation for a n00b

First of all I'd like to say thank you to all the members of this site who have gone before me, tried new techniques and made things easier for the rest of us! That being said, onto the topic..

After a change of location, my brother Mario is not sure what to use as his FC because he's going to have to induce fruiting in a small, dusty attic with very stale air floating around. The attic will be vacuumed to try and accommodate for this, but there's no way all the dust can be ridden. A fan will also be stationed up there to try and get some air flow, but it seems to me that the air will for the most part still be 'stale'. My main concerns are dust/contaminates getting in, lack of FAE, and how to incorporate some fluorescent lighting.

A shotgun seems as thought it would harbor too many contaminates since it is so open to the air.

If an air pump is able to be rigged so that it can bring in FA from outside, then a PMP is a possibility- but IDK if any air pumps have intake hoses. (I could have the intake hose outside of the house and the output in the FC)

A double tub or something similar seems like it might be the way to go? Ya know, throw some polyfil in the holes or something?

In addition, even if the air seems old and stale, will it still be able to provide some FAE?


ANY help is much appreciated guys.. Mario REALLY can't afford to have all these WBS jars go to waste!! Thanks in advance and shroom on!

u could hang tarps to build a somewhat cleaner room. like 10x10. floor ceiling and all. vacuum and dust the attic. wet the walls and wipe it off. put a SG ter in the middle. light on a timer. ud still have to climb up there and fan a couple times a day. if u felt it was clean enough put a fan on a timer that blows directly at the holes on the side. have it run 15min every couple hours.... just an idea

Sterility is the most important aspect of this hobby. You should do a really good cleaning job of your attic. Put some sort of air filtration device in your attic.

i would run a HEPA air filter up there after an extremley thorough cleaning, and an oscilating fan. stale air harbors contaminants, they love it. maybe a humidifier also?

First of all, attics are not suitable.  On a 70F day, they'll be 100F or more, which is too hot.

Sterility is NOT a concern in the fruiting stage.  You could probably fruit cubes in a shotgun terrarium at the garbage dump.  Massive amounts of fresh air is the way you prevent contamination during fruiting.  It's assumed that contaminants are going to land on your cakes.  The fresh air prevents them from germinating and growing.

Thank you everyone for all your responses! Mario and I definitely understand that an attic is certainly not the ideal place to cultivate, but you gotta make due with what ya got.. That being said I will be giving the attic a thorough cleaning. Mario knew that the two hardest things to adjust for would be the temperature and FAE but he'll do what he can.

For FAE I figure I'll adjust the vents on the sides of the attic to try and let in a lot more air, and I'll keep a fan going up there so the air keeps circulating. If I can get my hands on a HEPA filter I'll throw one up there too.

As far as temperature goes, I think it'll be much more of a problem  in the winter but we can compensate with a heat blanket (works great for incubation)

And for the FC, Mario thinks he'll go with a shotgun or double tub.. he's leaning towards the dubtub though because the FAE might be slightly lacking.

Any other thoughts/recommendations?
