Going on holiday
    #10765861 -

Hi all!
I'm of on holiday on 29.8 for 5 weeks. I'm hoping to have some fully colonised pf cakes as I come back. The thing is, I'd like them to colonise a bit before I go so I can check for contaminations, but my trip is 5 weeks long. If I start them around now, will they be to long in the incubator?

I think it would be too long, unless you want to come back to jars packed to the brim with mushrooms. I suppose you could do something to slow the colonization, like make the substrate a little more dense, or keep them in a really cool area. I think the longest any of my jars have taken to colonize was about 5 or 6 weeks, and that's because the substrate was packed a little too much.

if you do everything right, 5 weeks is too long. the substrate will most likely dry up, or something else will happen to ruin your jars(CO2 buildup, rot, etc.). if you can get a jar to take 5 weeks or more to colonize, you're either really good or really bad. the exception being certain wood-loving varieties...

Well, with all the mistakes and failures I have had, I'd have to say BAD...

If you pack the substrate down firmly and incubate at room temp say like 72-76 it should take about that much time.

Yeah,I'm gonna try anyway. I do have 1 pf cake that colonised slower than the others on my 1 run and it stayed in the incubator for 3 months, fully colonised for at least 1,5 and I moved it to the FC a week a go and its fruiting ok...

I'm thinking of making some LC as well, how long will it stay usably?

if kept in a refrigerator once colonized, LC will keep for months, if no contams are present.
