Is concrete the best thing for roads?
    #10764533 -

I've noticed that in Minnesota, roads are constantly  under construction and I got to wondering if there is a better material to make roads out of than concrete? Perhaps something more durable/flexible?

Is anyone here knowledgable on this subject or maybe even a civil engineer?

I don't think they are made of concrete...its asphalt that they are made out of, which is quite flexible and grips better.

I would imagine it's the best thing that's affordable...  If it wasn't I would imagine they would have started using whatever else, so they wouldn't have to spend even more $ fixing it AGAIN the next time it wears down.

Ya it's asphalt

I'd be willing to bet it is better than asphalt.

The Autobahn in Germany is made of concrete, so I believe it is the best.

Yeah but asphalt has rubber and shit in it, doesn't it? So the rubber from the tires would grip a rubbery road better than a concrete one, I would think. Might be wrong though, but it makes sense to me.

Concrete is more durable than asphalt but also costs more and is more time-consuming to install.

it really depends on the location, in colder areas concrete will
be more durable, in temperate zones like the south asphalt works
well for the cost, each has different characteristics that are
desirable, asphalt for instance will usually allow water to pass
through and has better expansion characteristics, concrete has to
allow water to run off and if a crack develops and freezing occurs
it expands the crack

Yea, but concrete can be teatured to aid in grip.
Asphalt breaks down faster than concrete.
Making it a much better road builder IMO.

Again it is kinda hard to argue with the results from the Autobahn.

The reason it seems so bad in places like Minnesota (or Central New York where I grew up) is because it gets fucking unrelenting amounts of salt. Plus they can only do road work realistically for about 4-5 months a year. So that means they have to repair main roads every summer and they can't spread out the work like they do in places even just a bit further south.

It really fucking sucks.

remove it and replace it because patching doesnt work for long on

We have a few concrete roads here in Arkansas. Mainly asphalt though.
IME the concrete roads don't get the potholes that asphalt does.
When it freezes in winter, by summer there are new cracks & bigger holes on the asphalt roads.

I rarely see potholes or cracks in the concrete roads.

Without knowing anything my guess is in states with relatively rough winters both asphalt and concrete roads need to be repaired/maintained and asphalt is cheaper to upkeep.

We had a concrete road layed down and in under 5 years its already got gouges from where the cars travel so bad it pulls you around. I don't think they did it right or something.

Consider yourself lucky then.

Our interstates are made of concrete and I can't remember the last time I had issues driving on them.

The rest of the roads are either asphalt or dirt/gravel.
The main state highways are kept better than some of the side roads.
Our main problem in my area are all the log trucks.
In the summer the asphalt gets soft and the trucks make valleys in the roads.
When it rains, each lane has 2 rivers of water on them.

Any road that gets a lot of big trucks should be made of concrete IMO.
Sadly this is not the case around here :shake:
except for the interstate that is

It doesn't really matter if you live in the south.
Salt, and like Makaveli said the plows, are really what take a toll on the roads.
I think larger temperature fluctuations hurt roads too. Going from below 0 to above freezing in a matter of a month creates stress from what I remember.

The Autobahn has a 24/7, 365 repair crew that fixes cracks as soon as they are formed.  This is too expensive for most purposes.

as I mentioned, when concrete starts to degrade it happens
pretty rappidly, one small crack can become a problem over a
single winter season, I've lived in several homes with concrete
driveways that lasted less than 20 year based on when the house
was built, one I lived in when I was a kid that I helped to pave
(really fucked up story there) that's more than 30 years old and
still intact

I cant even begin to tell you how many driveways and even roads
I've worked on doing repairs

Have you ever driven on the older parts of the autobahn that are concrete (the newer parts are asphalt) It's fucked!  The expansion joints cause a bump every twenty meters or so, it's all bump bump bump bump....  Sucks balls.

We have concrete express ways in MI and I fucking hate that bump bump bump... you'd think I'd be used to it, but I don't think I ever will get to that point.

Only the old nazi built parts are concrete, it is a good surface but those expansion joints suck.
