colonization tip
    #1076396 - 11/22/02 11:17 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I've always found that my cakes take ages to colonize the bottom of the jars fully even when tipping them and I think I've found a solution. I don't know if anyone else uses this technique but if you turn the jars bottoms up and tap them into your hand so the substrate pulls away from the bottom of the jar it seems to promote faster growth.

heres a better tip:

you are using a wee bit too much water, it seeps to the bottom of your jar and makes the bottom to wet to colonize. turning it upsidedown can help but using the right water to start with is easier

good tips. i've got the "bottom stall" problem right now my first time using alien substrate and T3 spores, which are supposed to be fast colonizers. i flipped the jars about a week ago but my guess is that is only so effective at reducing moisture and increasing oxygen. i'm going to try a gentle flip once every day or so to see if that helps. i'll try with half my jars for comparison and report back.

This happened to me I just could not get the bototm to colonize. So I just cut the bottom off and cased them broken up worked great.
