Any reason to know more than this when dealing with Law Enforcement in the US of A?

Need not say any more than that.
Here's some backup for that: Don't Talk to Cops, Part 1
Don't Talk to Cops, Part 2
Hard to argue with that.

NEVER lie to cops or give them fake ID unless it's REAL "dodgy".
In other words if you have some bullshit school ID with a fake name, never show that to cops, they will not take school, library card, bank ID etc serious UNLESS it's your passport or driver's licence.
So unles you are a bad ass and can source real fake IDs like driver's licence with your photo but fake name and/or passport then you should be OK.
besides that, always keep your mouth shut and don't be intimidated by the cops.
I can only imagine how many people might want to try commit suicide after a run in with real foul cops who threaten to throw you in jail for staling a candy bar or for drinking under age.

I was yanked out of my car, thrown on the ground and had a boot to the back of my head once for not using my turn signal at a stop sign that said "Stop except for left turn".
He found 3.5g of marijuana hidden really well in my car, which I denied was mine and said I had let my mom's friend borrow my car. I got away with a warning, but the officer also told me that I "have no rights" and refused to give me his badge number. I'm sure the tape of that incident disappeared as well.
I didn't go out except for work for 2 months.

A lot of towns have a Police Advisory Board, or Community Police Board, which is a great place to take any problems with cops. You can also just make a report directly to the station and usually something will happen. If the officer doesn`t give you his or her badge number write down the license plate or any other information (car number), and make a report. Always always make a report.

NEVER TALK. Here's a great personal story to illustrate (now that the statue of limitations is up):
When I was in high school, some kids fucked up the car of a known douche bag. On one particular douchey day, he went too far and a bunch of kids wrote busted the windows on his beloved car that mommy and daddy bought for him. They wrote 'fag' and all sorts of shit on his ride.
The police were called and my entire circle of friends were called in one by one.
The police first separate everyone to find discrepancies in their stories. If you stray from your story--even once--you're caught.
I was called by a detective to come in for questioning. I didn't realize it was out of my own free will to come. Since I wasn't being arrested for anything nor was there any proof, they couldn't 'come get me'. That was my first mistake.
So I went and the cop basically told me what happened and said that two of my friends fingered me as having done it. (THIS WAS A LIE, they NEVER said that!)
I started to sweat and freak out. The cop breat me down verbally and by telling me what'll happen to me, how I'll never go to college with a felony under my belt, hate crime, yadda yadda yadda. I was really nervous and thought about confessing to what I knew several times.
Then the cop grabbed a VHS video tape. He's like look, you can confess now and I'll work with you to reduce any criminal charges, but if you don't I'm going to book you to the full extent of the law. You WILL do jail time for this. He then patted the tape and said he's even GOT ME DOING IT ON TAPE!
I started to laugh. I knew that NO WHERE in my school were there any video cameras. I told him to play the tape if he's got me. He said no, I'll see it in court.
He left the room so I could speak with my mom. I saw signs stating that the room is recorded with video and audio so I kept my mouth shut even when my parents asked me what happened.
I asked if he was done and that I wanted to go home. He never called me in again.

- DON'T BELIEVE THE LIES
- IF THEY GOT SHIT, THEY DON'T NEED TO WORK WITH YOU, NOR DO THEY WANT TO--They'll just book you.

You should've reported this incident to your local police department.

Can cops legally lie like this?

Yes cops can lie. There's no law against lying to criminals. Only laws against lying to police and providing false testimony/false police reports.
The only thing you can ever do that could actually effect a cop is to file a complaint against the officer. As I had mentioned in another thread by ripping into a kid who thought he was super smart by smoking a spliff in a school zone and got caught for it--make sure you have a legit reason to file a report. If you got roughed up but were let go, just drop it. No reason to seek revenge cuz it's only going to come back and bit you in the ass. HARD.

First of all, why isn't there? Second of all, nobody is a criminal until proven guilty by the court of law.
