Eq's have been good to me, this might be pure luck, but i got 8 dry grams off one cake. i'm doing b+ now, they are doing great. as long as you read up on how to grow you dont really need to worry about contams, especially if you have pictures, people can tell you what you did wrong if by any chance u do get contams. good luck. de

if your not trying to grow intence amounts , try doing the PF cake method... about 3 or 4 cakes should provide you enoughto trip with a few friends... its usually a step in the right direction when you go with cakes first... id go with the mezzies not cause they are easier ( i think all p.cubes are the same difficulty) cause im just fond of how they look and the vibe they give me. good luck -lost

Contamination is easy to spot, it's just difficult to accept...green mold is the most common, and you really can't miss it, plus the jars smell when they get contaminated, and don't have that pleasant mushroomy smell. I've got B+ going right now, and while the first cake to flush produced only one ten gram shroom another is pushing 25 to 30 as we speak, really fuckin' cool. It's a slow colinizer though, and it's easy to get impatient and birth prematurely, as i did (shoulda spent another week in the jars, which wouldv'e been over threre weeks).

not realy, you are just opening the cake up for contams.... the cake will produce a certain amount depending on the amount of nutrients and water in the cake, so either you have 1 full cake or 1 cut in half,, same weight output..!!
Piece of cake.. haha..

In reply to:
could I leave them to colonize over christmas break
yes. it may even take longer.
In reply to:
If you cut your cakes in half, does it increase the yield
im gonna say yes....if it is fully colonized when you cut it. most fruits (or at least mine) tend to come out of the bottom or the top of the cake, by cuting it horizontally, im guessing you would get 2 times as much. if you want higher yeilds, i suggest you case though. imho.

people sometimes find that cakes just tend to be messy, and if you're goin for more of a yield from the same cake, you, IMHO, need to case, b/c it gives it more nutrients to feed off of, like the substrate layer, and, yes, B+ does tend to colanize a LOT slower, so you might wanna check the spore sites, and compair and see which ones colanize the fastest then go to the FSR's and get u some spores, or just trade with someone here.

actually, the point of a casing is not to provide nutrients. think of straight verm casings; there is little or no addition to nutrients from the verm to the mycelium.
here is a good link describing why to case: http://shroomery.org/faq/faq.php?display=faq&nr=49&catnr=4&prog=1&lang=en
similarly, casing should not necessarily increase total yield. that is also reflected in that link. maximum total yield is determined by the total amount of nutrients available. if you start with one cake of "nutrients" you will have one cake of nutrients regardless of whether or not the cake is cased.
what casing does, however is provide fuller, more even flushes. sort of like getting all your shrooms at once instead of a few at a time. plus it helps keep the substrate moist so that you don't end up with the problem of bluing, drying cakes that stop producing.
imho.

oh, well doesn't it take nutrients from the soil? I use soil/ verm for bottom layer, and soil for top casing layer.

As far as nutrients from te soil i dont think thats correct seeing how some people use verm by itself on top and even verm or perlite on bottom

I am a sort of newbie too, and i have a question. If you took a fully colonized 1/2 pint rice cake, and cut it in half and put each half in a pint jar, or bigger, will mushrooms grow on it, given that the lid is closed and there is a bit or verm on the bottom? I wanna do sumthing a long the lines of hippies myco-tek, except have it so the fruits have space, and arent stuck up against the side of the jar.Would that work?
