Certo instead of agar!!
    #1073158 - 11/21/02 08:37 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Hidy Hoe.

Hey, question for all you strawbery jam makers???

I just can't seem to find Agar anywere around here, but i woke up this morning with an idea that struck me as weird, why not use certo,, made by Kraft.

It's used to solidify jams and jellys, would it not also solidify potato juice? ie pda?

anyone ever try or know anything about it?

cg

ps: i looked on google for info , but only recipies come up, no info on the certo itself

Bump..

Soooooo,,,..... no one knows or what?

is there something special with agar? or does it simply solidify the medium?

>is there something special with agar?
Yes, it?s not digested by mycelium.

What you want to use is pectin, and , as far I know, is digested by mycelium, thus your "agar" will liquefy.

but hey..

ok, it might liquify, but is this a problem? as soon as i can isolate a small amount of mycelium i can transfer it to another dish and eliminate contams, then transfer to grain and i'm off.!!!

the reason i ask is that my syringes are old and seem to take a LONG time to start germination, i have a regular house plate with a dark print on it that i'd like to use but it's been left out in the open air and not shielded, soooo, it has contams mixed in it!!

see were i'm going?

Have you tried going to an Asian Supermarket around your area? They have plenty of cheap Agar Agar which are used to make jello with. Also works great for cultures as well.

The ones here look like this. Oddly enuf, they keep it behind the counter. $1.00 for a 25g. bag. Look under"oriental" in the yellow pages.

Ah, you cunning monkey, you!

If they ask you why you want the agar, say you want to make a jelly dessert.
