Spore syringe question...
    #1074763 -

I've been making my first ever spore syringes and I've noticed that the dark flakes of the sporeprint do not dissolve in the sterile water. I have purchased prefilled syringes before and they were filled with clear liquid with no hint whatsoever of any dark "flakes" floating within. So far, my syringes work fine so I'm not really concerned with their quality... but I was wondering this...

When I prepare a syringe and use it to innoculate a PF cake... do I need to make sure that some of the dark "spore flakes" get injected into the cake, or is there enough spores suspended in the liquid that I can't see? Up to this point, I've been making sure that I get plenty of flakes in each innoculation... but that often means wasting extra cc's of the innoculate. If I knew that the clear liquid was good enough to use on it's own, then I'd go with it... but so far I've been plunging away until I see some flakes in each transfer. (sometimes takes 2 or 3 cc's)

I've heard of people using special laboratory "blenders" to mix up the innoculate... but there's nooooo way I'm going to all that trouble...with my luck... I'd have the little devils growing in my Cuisinart.

One more time... my syringes work just fine so far... but I'm still wondering if it's necessary to make sure that the dark flakes actually get through the needle and into the cake.

Spores are microscopic so don't worry about it. Give the syringe a shake before you use it to innoculate if you want visible spores clumps to be shot out. The more spores the quicker the colonisation time will be as I recall.

The flake thing has me kinds worried. I have never seen them stay flakes for long once they hit the water. Try this. Suck up some innoculum and then shoot it back out into whatever it's in trying to break up the clumps. Also keep a bit (.5 cc) in the syring itself. The bubble will help break up groups of spores.

I have seen groups of spores stuck together like DNA strands but not flakes.

Support bacteria - they're the only culture some people have.

My first vendor bought syringe had visible spores (eq) and the one I made 2 days ago using the entire contents of a print had about the same amount of black flakes I just thought it was a stingy print but I guess if you can make them with next to nothing then it's all good. The spores in mine didn't dissolve either.
