Having some trouble finding stuff
    #1074580 - 11/21/02 07:00 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hey everyone. Got a few questions:
1. Where do I find coco coir for substrates?
2. Where do I find calcium carbonate?
3. Can oven bags be used in a pressure cooker?
4. I've read a tek that said a fresh shroom can be used to start a jar of grain....would it not begin to rot and eventually contaminate the whole jar?

I'm excited about starting some casings and don't want to mess it up.

5. I have some left over 1/2 pint PF Tek jars I want to case. How many would I need to fill up a 1ft * 1ft aluminum container? I plan to slice them up so would 3 be enough? It's hard to judge this.

I'll take a stab just for fun

1) Pet store

2) Pet store (oyster shell)

3) Yes, if proper precautions are taken

4) You need to re-read that FAQ, it's a bit advanced for your apparent level

5) You got me there, I would say use logic and figure it out yourself.

Good Luck.

What is coco coir normally used for with pets, i.e....what part of the store would I find it in? (cats, dogs, birds....)?

Go to petsmart. Look for "Bed a Beast" or you can look for "ZooMed Eco Earth Value Pack" in the reptile section.

yeah, I figured that out a little later, but I was being a bit of a dick as well. I guess I should've said nicely that searching around in the forums and reading the faq's will answer all of his questions. There's no substitute for doing your own research, the information is all here, you just have to be willing to seek it out.

You need to remember that beginners feel very frustrated sometimes by the information overload. Its all very confusing sometimes. Think back to when you first started, and recall your first few failed attempts.

So when they ask clarifying questions, and they're told to "go read the FAQ", they get really pissed off.

yea but its frustrating to everyone else who is on here to explore new topics, but you have to read the same damn question over and over again. i want to help everyone as best as i can, but they need to do their part to do some reading. growing mushrooms is actually interesting. and it's obvious that more than half the people are getting into for the drug content of it, they might as well buy them from a dealer than waste our time in here.

- im going to do a count of how many people post a day as to if they really need a pressure.

The neighborhood armadillo said all his attempts have done well-because he read a lot first. If you don't have the patience to read and do the research, your procedures will probably suck anyway, because you can't or won't follow simple instructions.. I see a correlation.

He was definitely not being a dick. As you can see I'm new here and I haven't even grown anything yet, but there is no substitute for research. There's a fine line that you shouldn't cross, as in 95% research 5% questions. If you do that much research, you won't have questions anyway unless it's about something obscure. Although it's tempting to ask someone about something, you really should search first and make sure it's not in plain sight (or even hidden for that matter). Make the effort to find it! And when someone says read the FAQ, don't get pissed. They wouldn't tell you to read the FAQ if it wasn't in there, they'd say "That's interesting, well in my experience . . ." Don't be afraid of a little reading, it will do wonders for you (and I hope when I start in a few weeks it will help me out too).

Being a newbie myself I would have to say that some people just need to ask questions so that they can make sure they understand what they have read... But if you do your own research you can find out a bunch of stuff.. I love this place!!
