White Polypore

Habitat: Found on rotting log above a small stream in a park near Portland Oregon.
Overall width of the mushroom was about four inches.
Spore print color: Not yet known.
No bruising.
I thought this was a tree oyster at first glance.

But then I saw the underside:

This is a picture of more mushrooms of the same species growing from the underside of the same log. The log was suspended over a small running creek.

My first guess was Bondarzewia berkeleyi, but they are not supposed to grow in this area. Any ideas?

Bone Polypore (Oligoporus obductus), syn. (Osteina obducta)? Not sure of the present nomenclature.

I forgot to mention that the mushroom is somewhat soft and fleshy - (though not as soft or fragile as an oyster). I think that rules out the bone and birch polypores (but those are tops on my list of guesses as well).

I guess no one knows what it is. Try posting it on mushroomobserver.org.

Shit, that's the most magical thing I've seen here for a while.

Very cool, looks like a Sheep Polypore, Albatrellus ovinus.

I thought that too at first; I noticed that the Sheep Polypore (Albatrellus ovinus) is mycorrhizal and the Bone Polypore (Oligoporus obductus) is sabprobic.

Is Oligoporus obductus soft when it is younger? Anyway, I think your right, I just read in MD it hardens as it gets older.

I'm leaning towards thinking it's a young Bone Polypore (Oligoporus obductus) that hasn't hardened yet - I haven't been able to find very many pictures of this mushroom online, but what I've seen seems to match. Formerly known as Polyporus osseus and Osteina obducta - too many name changes!
What I want to know is, is it edible?

All polypores are edible as long as they aren't too woody to eat.

I just chewed up a small raw piece. Tasted deliciously mushroomy at first, but then there was a bitter polypore aftertaste very similar to Reishi tea. Really nice texture. I'm now curious as to how it might taste cooked.

I figured this one would be one of those situations since it is described as being extremely hard.
