Flushing?
    #1073827 - 11/21/02 03:06 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

my dogs casings of BRF/verm with cambodians started to fruit about 3 weeks ago. My question is about flushes. Are the shrooms supposed to grow at about the same rate? his aren't. Since they started, He has had shrooms of all sizes. He'll have 1 or 2 full grown shrooms, 3-6 that are just beginning to form heads and about 20 in between these two extremes. Also, the biggest one he got was only about 4". Is that normal Temp 76-80. Fanning 2-3 times a day. 90-95% humidity. Any suggestions.

Several things your dog can try:

Pick aborts early, so they do not stay on the casing, diverting nutrients away from fruits with maturing potential. One can also sacrifice a few of the early birds that pop up to increase the yield from the "middle-sized shrooms" which seem to make up the majority of the casing you describe. This strategy will not always increase overall growth weight, even if it results in more even mushroom size.

Disperse the spawn evenly (crumble cake into even bits and lay in an even layer), and make sure the casing is layered to an even depth, and has correct moisture and pH levels throughout.

Check to see that the humidity, air flow, and temperatures are the same throughout the terrarium.

Also before one is ready to initiate pinhead formation, he/she should make sure the spawn is given a chance to take over the casing in a very dark, reasonably air-tight, and reasonably warm environment. Low temps, low C02 levels, or too much light will initiate early pinning on exposed spots of the casing.

also, when some mycelium starts to first show through the top casing layer, put more casing substrate on that small area, so you are slowing the faster mycelium growth.
what this does is allows the mycelium to collinate evenly, thus having even mushie growth.

i dont know if you already do this, but if you dont, its worth it
