Oysters,Chanterelles,and a snake,Oh My!!!
    #10735302 - 07/24/09 08:50 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

So,I left the great Cubensis state of Florida, and moved to a State completely void of psychoactive mushrooms, but that didn't stop me from getting out and looking for some edibles.I found at least 50 different species of mushrooms, but I only was able to snap a few pics before my camera battery went dead. There at the end of the hunt,I found a lil patch of very psilocybe looking mushrooms and all the bottom caps had purple spore prints all over them dropped from the bigger caps above.I brought them back, but alas they got tore up beyond recognition in my pack.Oh well, next rains,I'll head back,Anyway,I manged to find a big mess of Oyster mushrooms!!!! They are in the first three pics. That plate full of Oysters is the biggest plate I own,and it's nearly 14 inches in diameter.

Next we have some Chanterelles, and let me tell you guys, there were these by the thousands.Everywhere I looked they were there.I only brought back a few though, because it will take me some time to consume all these goodies:grin:

Then, before I left,I jumped over a fence into a huge Cow field, and took a lil look.I found what looks to be a Panaeolus species of some kind, and then these other growing out of Dung.

                      Then,it started to get dark,so I cut through a creek,and found this lil guy.Ain't he cute:grin:

No,I wouldn't hold a poisonous snake like that. It's a Banded water snake.Very common around the south.if it were poisonous,i'd be sick right now.It bit me numerous times:grin:

Nice mushrooms.  The ones that got crushed in your backpack are probably Psathyrella.  They are extremely common, very fragile, dark purple brown spored and look vaguely like psilocybin mushrooms.  Excellent snake!

Oysters have no toxic lookalikes in the US, however in Japan and Australia there is Omphalotus which has a bluish tint, glows in the dark and will make you really sick.

Chanterelles are easy to ID by taking a close look at the gills to make sure they are ridges.  If you have real gills, its probably a toxic Omphalotus.  Post some macro shots if you have any doubts.

Thanks Alan,I've picked and eaten Oysters many times, and I was almost 100 percent that they were it.The Chanterelles have ridges, and not true gills,so I'm cool there too.I'll be going out again for more soon,as I want to stock up for the winter.I all ready blanched, and froze all but a few for dinner tonight, and I plan on returning next rains to get as many more as I can. Thanks for the help Buddy:grin:
