ive been watering the casing with a spray bottle and misting from like 3 feet away to not "punch" the pins.

For the record, you can handle fully colonized subs with bare hands.  It never hurts to give em a wash first, but I do all my tub work in open air, with bare hands.  A fully colonized, healthy block will resist whatever is on your hands.  I wouldn't expose substrate that isn't fully colonized however.
