Honey water problem?
    #1073312 - 11/21/02 11:47 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I just made some honey water, and just finished sterilizing it. There is something in the water though. I've done this b4 but never had anything inside the jar until after I inoc. and the myc had started to grow. Well now it looks like I got myc growin inside, but that's impossible. Any help would be appreicated.

That is a slight caramalization of the sugars.
As long as it`s not big chunks and just slightly wispy at the bottom then it`s still perfect.
Next time try to sterilise for a shorter period or at a lower temperature for longer.

ok, Thanx. I steamed for 30 min on med low heat since I don't have a PC. I used a 1/4 pt jar, maybe I should stick to 1/2 pt and pt jars.

is it just slighlty wispy at the bottom??
All my jars normally come out with some wispy sugars at the bottom.

well, when I let it settle, it forms a big glob at the bottom, but when I spin it, it has tiny lil specks flyin around, and one or two med size speks.

ok that sounds like you caramalized the sugars deffinatelly.
How much honey did you use??
Too much honey will also collect ones sterilisation is complete.

Very interesting.
I`m saying this because well it really doesn`t seem like you exposed your jar to extreme heat or anything.
I usually sterilise my honey jar for 45 minutes at 15psi.
Which ultimatelly runs at high till pressure is reached and then the temperature is dropped.
So maybe next time sterilise for longer on a lower setting.
You have to take a look at the solution and think for yourself wether the lumps in there will be a problem when it comes to trying to identify the mycelium and contamination.

You most likely still have a good jar there.
It`s totally up to your judgement.

well, I'm just gonna toss it instead of waste a limited supply of spore inoc. I had it set on the lowest setting, that will still boil at. I guess it's a 50/50 or some kinda ratio of it caramelizing.

well I tried it again with the 1/4 pt jar and I got the same reslts so I guess it's standard for that size jar. I had simular results with a pt jar, but not exact. The pt jar had little TINY bedris, but not as much and not as big pieces. I plan to inoc. now.
