Portabella and Cubes
    #1070031 - 11/20/02 01:03 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

What would happen if I grew some Cubes and Portabella together? Would the Portabella be psychoactive? Would the cubes taste better?

well, i've heard of myc networks growing together, like when u have a contam, doesn't it grow into the myc network and come out as part of the product, and that's why it's dangerous to eat the mushrooms from contamed jars?

Refer to the previous analogy again.. Roots are also structured networks, but do rose roots grow into/with orange tree roots?

than why does it matter if one eats the mushrooms from a contaminated cake?

Despite what some people say there is no evidence to suggest that the mycelium will take up/absorb toxins from other species in the same jar. In most cases of acute poisoning I would hazard to say that it probably came from spores and/or pieces of contaminants too small to see on the carpophores (fruit bodies), possibly in combination with an allergic reaction. Some bacteria and molds will secrete compounds that are toxic and heat/moisture stable, so if some of these compounds got onto your mushrooms you may not see them. Sadly it doesn't take much for some of these toxins to work you over in a bad way. That is why caution is warranted.

You could, but there is no guarantee that you got all of the toxins. And washing the mushrooms will leach out some of the good stuff in addition to that. Your best bet (if you have contaminated mushrooms) is just to just relax.. throw them out unless you are 100% sure of the contaminant and know it to be non-toxic... and just start over again. It won't be that much longer.
It can be really frustrating sometimes, but it is better to wait than to gamble with having your liver, brain, eyes, nervous system shut down... kind of like being dead.
You'll live longer and be happier if you just have a little patience.
In case you do decide to try some contaminated ones.. keep a small sample set aside for poison control (in case they need it). And don't tell them they were "magic" mushrooms either.
peace and good judgement

In reply to:

I wouldn't be surprised is a little digging turned up evidence that they could indeed absorb toxins from other species. It's widely known that they absorb all kinds of environmental toxins.

Maybe a research project for tomorrow. For now, goodnight.

If that were a true statment ....... mycelium is more like humans ! What a bunch of BULLSHIT ! Why is the growth of mycelium reffered to as a "vegative" growth stage in the mushroom cultivator ! That one was so stupid I can not even respond properly ! We do not absorb moisture through our pores , we do not absorb nutes from the soil !

Do mushrooms have acids that break down matter to a state where it can be absorbed into the blood stream ? I think not ! They grow on "composted" matter ....meaning already partially broken down into simpler protiens , etc........
I feel stupider for even reading that remark ! :smirk:

Here is the results of this little experiment , can I cross a potabella with a P.CUBES ?
The strongest mycelium will grow into mushies , especially the one that favors the enviro you create . You may get lucky and get a little of each in different areas of the container , but you will not get halucinogenic portabellas , nor will you get P.CUBES safe to sell to the food industry .

tisk tisk tisk, you look dumber after making yours.  I believe what matts is refering to is the prduction of powerful enzymes by the mushroom to digest nutrients externally, and absorb those nutrients. The hyphae of a growing mushroom spread, increasing the ability to feed. The dikaryotic hyphae within the mushroom act as the "blood stream", circulating the digested nutrients throughout the fruitbody.

Speak on what you know, not on what you assume.  :frown:

In nature mycelium never grows by itself. When you pick shrooms I can assure you that there were some contams on that patty...
