Swami's Tarot Card Experience
    #1072366 - 11/21/02 12:45 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Every once in a while I have to post one of these stories to:

A. Keep people off balance who think they know me.

B. Become cannon fodder and play the "straight" man so people like ---- can practice their chops.

Some 15 years ago, I went to a seminar on American Indian Shamanism with Lynn Andrews (the female '80s counterpart to Carlos Castaneda). It was 90% women. We formed into "Power Circles" of 10; myself and 9 babes, er I mean, aspiring shamanesses. I got little out of the ceremonies and exercises, but did stay in touch with my "Power Sisters".

A year later I invited them over to my house for a *ahem* reunion. (Go Swami! Go Swami! Go Swami!) You gotta love that touchy-feely new age stuff. Lots of groping, I mean, hugging going on. Stay with me, we are almost to the point of this tale.

One lady whips out her tarot cards and does a reading then she gives me the deck and says "I want you to do a reading on my sister." (her flesh and blood, not Power). I protest saying that I have no clue what the tarot symbols even mean. But to be a good sport, I oblige.

Now I know nothing of a personal nature about any of these ladies. I grab the cards and start to fake a reading just to entertain my guests. I say "Carla, I see you in the healing field, something where you use your hands and touch. Carla gets all excited and says, "I am a masseuse and am studying to be a chiropractor!"

The death card appears and I am puzzled. "Hmmm, this is strange as I detect no immediate death with your family or friends. Yet somehow this is related to your spirituality." I ponder for a moment more and say hesitantly, "This doesn't make sense to me, but here goes. You feel as if you cannot openly express your spirituality until your husband dies. He is of a traditional religious background and doesn't understand your interest in shamanism. You love him and wish him no harm, but you see him as an impediment. This is wrong. Continue as you are doing and he will come to understand you as he cannot fail to see your loving nature. Abandon this negative thought."

Suddenly Carla and Maria start jabbering excitedly. "See? Maria says. I told you Arturo does not have to die for you to discover your true path." Then Maria turns to me and says, "I had faith that you would do a proper reading. You have helped Carla more than you will know!"

DISCLAIMER: I offer this up for EXACTLY what it is: a story. This is not intended to make a case for or against anything. OK now have fun with it.

i've always thought getting one's fortune told by tarot would be as accurate and to the point as the morning newspaper's horoscope - . but to be honest i have never tried it, on either side of the table, so i cannot be certain.
what do you think swami, or is it still open court on that one?

using the tarot as a system to explore the imagination is possibly a better way to spend one's time..i find your meaty definition of the death card quite charming.
was this story kicked off in your head from that sniper pair that left key 13 as a clue? learn to love perpetual change for maximum straight line acceleration.

Some girl did a tarot card reading for me a few years ago.  She said I would become a very powerful and/or influential person, and that I should start writing again (for some reason that I can't remember).  Well, I don't write anymore and nobody listens to me, so I dont seem to influential.  However, she did mention something about politics, and I am somewhat involved in drug policy reform, but that could easily be written off as a self-fulfilled prophecy.  Not sure what I'm getting at......the beer's kickin in and i just feel like ramblin....so............tarot cards could be something significant, but who the fuck knows.  At least they're entertaining.

Hehe.

Obviously you have psychic powers and refuse to accept it!

..and when you woke up naked on your living room floor the next morning to find empty beer cans strewn about, an empty shroom bag, clothes everywhere, a deck of playing cards and several blowup dolls.. it all started coming back to you?

heheh, hey.. you said have fun with it!

Here's my experience with the "supernatural" (kind of reminds me of you tarot card experience):

I was taking a massage course at a pretty cool new age type place (where everyone happened to be naked, but that's beside the point). Well at this course, they teach you that at the end of the one-hour massage, you should give the subject about 5 minutes worth of "energy work", where you don't actually touch the person, but you move your hands around a few inches above them to get the "energy" in their body to move around. I thought that part of the massage was a big waste of time, and I certainly didn't notice anything when people did energy work on me. But one of the gals I did this to told me she was amazed at how "powerful" my energy work was, and everyone in the class that I did this to started observing this as well.

I don't know what the hell was going on, but I have a theory about it. I certainly don't believe in the "energy" these folks were talking about, so that makes it more unlikely that I have special "powers". I had some of the biggest hands in the class, and I believe they were able to feel the warmth of my hands near their bodies, and mistook that for psychic energy. Anyone have a better explanation?
