Basically sticking two mini mono tubs into a big tub and close it up to keep in the humidity and open and fan it every so often...

What strain? It looks like a medium-sized cube, but has dimples like amazon or GT.
Good summary. It's a GT isolate.

Stuck the other ones into a bigger tub closed off and sprayed around with water so that the humidity is at least 80% in there, and then go ahead and open it up and fan it every so often...
Anyone ever try this? Thanks I'll get pics soon!

Hey doc_t, got some info from facey that he told me I should run by you...

faceyneck said: Also - you're referring to just off the first flush, right?
I'm sure I could get 8-9oz per tub through 2-3 flushes. It would be nice to get it all at once though!
You can do it facey!!! Hahaha I want to do a 105qt monotub at some point when I get to monos rather than my MSG I have right now...you seen my recent update facey?
Nah, man. My job fucks things up. Severely overqualified whipping boy.
Anyway, since I get virtually no sunlight, I'm not around these forums when most people are. In your journal, I assume? I'll check it out.
Haha yea it is and I saw you posted in there and left you a reply question:
Quote:
freeskierpj said: Yea I quickly realized that it actually liked being out of the bag, especially once I got the micropore tape on there and have a little bit of light in the area (there's a light in the closet that I've been turning on maybe 2-4 hours a day and I noticed the growth increased a lot right from the first 24 hours after I took it out of the bag so I have since left it out of the bag...
So you're saying that while it's colonizing to fan it once a day? Would you suggest like taking the top off and fanning using the lid? I'd be worried about contaminants that way so I'm not too sure but do you really think that's a good idea?
And as to the MS vs Clone/Iso Strain yes I am aware of that and will definitely be doing at least a clone LC (but I finally have my PC coming so I'll probably try and get some on agar as well...
What are your thoughts/more detailed explanation?
I'll try to remember to cut and paste the answer:
During colonization, fanning will more likely prevent contamination than cause it. Fanning moves the air around, giving any trich spores that might be getting fresh the boot.
It probably doesn't matter, but for the first 2-3 days I do not manually fan, as to leave the environment as calm as possible. After that period, I manually fan once a day, sometimes twice a day during fruiting, for the rest of the substrate's life. Mind you, though, this is my first tub.
Once a day, I open up the tub, and fan with the lid, for maybe 5-10 seconds... just go off how much fanning I want to do.
During fruiting, you could even bump that up to twice a day, and it would work great. This is for a traditional monotub, though, and I haven't grown a msg, and probably won't. You actually will probably get more than enough fae with the msg, and need to RESTRICT fae if anything. Doc_T is probably a better guy to talk to than me.
Even though I say fae restriction may be necessary, keeping it out of the bag is still the better option. You may simply need to place your msg in a draft-free area, like a typical closet with sliding doors that don't seal.
12/12 light schedule is best.
That's probably enough info for now. As always, lemme know if ya' need more help.
Also I was wondering: (Post copied from faceys thread) Well the myc really has a grip on the substrate now and I will fan as you said for 5-10 seconds once a day (this is during colonization so the holes are taped up with micropore tape right now. There is no condensation on the tub which I take as a good thing and no droplets on the substrate again taken as a good thing.
A question though, since I want to fan once a day and introduce FAE, will I want to keep light off of it (not by keeping it in a trash bag but by keeping it in very low ambient light that is in the room or will the colonization benefit from a 12/12 light schedule?
The reason I ask is because I am fruiting my Mazatapec bag invitro now that it is definitely 100% colonized:
 Full bag
Some small rhizmorphic growth (this can be seen in many spots throughout the bag)
And I have info from Morelman saying put it in 12/12 until I see pins and then open it up via small holes around the substrate so I want to put it in 12/12 but this would have to be in the same closet as the tub is located until I move February 1st and open up into a larger space for cultivation...
Just asking for thoughts on lighting during tub colonization with some FAE going on even though it isn't much as I don't want to initiate pinning too early...

Alright thanks. What about the light issue? Is having 12/12 light fine during colonization? I have the holes taped with micropore tape for GE so it's not getting FAE and I found that it seems to enjoy at least a little light during the day (sped up my colonization a bit during both the spawn colonization and the bulk...)

Alright, well I don't wanna put them in a bag and get rid of GE but I will have to check about the lighting and how it may hurt/help...

You don't want bright direct light but some ambient light is ok.
Standard colonizing and pinning theory apply, this is well documented.

Just curious but whats the reasoning for keeping the micropore tape on the holes in the tub?

Was loosing too much humidity...just specific for my conditions. Took a few trial and error deals to figure out what was needed for growth.

Oh, I could see that happening!
If I remember correctly, Doc_T keeps his msgs in a greenhouse with a humidifier for that reason. If it works, it works.
I'm totally diggin' these traditional monotubs. I can't believe it's taken me this long to retire my greenhouses.
At the same time, I'm getting a couple cultures of oyster, and I have some reishi and shiitake 75, so, looks like I'll be right back on the greenhouse bandwagon in the next few months anyhow.
Did you use a coir casing layer? The knotting is incredible, though, if a casing layer was not used, then the substrate could use to be colonized better. It's a better contamination prevention.
I seem to have problems with coir and contamination after the first flush, unless it's very, very well colonized. For that reason, when using a coir-based substrate, I use a rather large amount of spawn - about a 1:2 ratio, sometimes more.
Manure colonizes far better for me.
