If someone would have told me 5 years ago that fanning and misting shit in a container would have me laughing for 5 hours straight I probably would have laughed. But not for 5 hours.

Doc, forgive me if this is already posted, but could I get a link to your substrate prep? Or could you tell me the ratios/prep methods you use? I'm considering trying something like this with straw, maybe a little bigger container though. Thanks

Awesome tek Doc! Maybe I'll make like 4 of these rather than 2 larger monos for my current grow...hmmm options options options...

So far so good in my experiments with the mini MSG concept.
This weekend I have to go out of town. I'll be gone from Friday evening until Monday evening, no-one will be home to take care of misting until then. Since I noticed my MSG's tend to evaporate rather fast, this has me kinda worried that my substrate will dry out too much by the time I get back.
Add this to the fact that I have what looks to be a killer flush coming in (first flush on this tub):

So what I did is cover up most of the holes around the sides of the tub with micropore tape, hoping this will cut down on FAE enough to prevent the sub from drying out too much. I left two holes uncovered on either end, and four holes on either sides and on the top, figuring that covering up all the holes would be asking for trouble (stale air not good). Here's what it looks like:
That pic was taken just after misting, normally I let them dry out between mistings, usually doing one or two good mistings per day.
Any ideas that might help this flush come through nicely? I am also dunking the sub right now to give it a bit extra hydration hoping it will last until Monday evening. I'm expecting a huge mess of spores in the tub when I get back.
This tub has already yielded a monster 74g fruit to start things off which I was pleased with:

My first MSG yielded 764g wet (83.5g dry) which I was quite happy with considering it was my first attempt. Strain is PF Classic, substrate is typical coir/coffee/verm/gypsum mixture.
Also in case anyone is wondering, my MSG's are lit internally with 6500K LED lighting (see my other threads for more info). I plan to post more pics of my setup soon. It has been working exceptionally well. My MSG is located in a large closet (88" wide by 30" deep) as it's currently the best location for it. (and no I don't live with my parents, lol)

I think it is important to remember that doc keeps his MSG in a martha with humidifiers going. I tried what you are and had the same problems with humidity. I had to go to a mini mono tub for proper humidity and air flow. This in no way is to take away from what doc has done. Matter of a fact he seems to have it nailed down very well. My next plan is to do the same with mini tubs and a martha for the humidity. myc

I think it's important to read the first couple posts of a thread- that first tub happened in room air. I hope I'll be doing a few more in room air this summer, I'll post when I do. But yeah, most of my grows have supplemental humidity- you may or may not need it where you are. I guess people running furnaces need something, maybe a humidifier in the room.
I want to try the 27qt in room air- so far it's not any better than the rectangular one on the greenhouse. It holds about the same amount of substrate and yields about the same, but takes up more space.

Just thought I'd let ya'll know, I started a 105 qt (I believe... could be more/less) version of this (somebody else actually posted the same Sterilite containers that I'm using) yesterday. Coir/castings/verm/coffee 20 qts, 5 qts of WBS spawn (I'm not sure of the strain because my ignoramass forgot to label which syringe it came from). I'm very excited, everything went very well and felt great! I'll post pics later, I've got to run to class now.

Well my hole-taping experiment seems to have worked out pretty decent for the most part, other than an epic mess of spores due to the overdue flush. Here's what I came back to Monday evening:
Total wet weight on the first flush is 564g. Substrate was quite dry when I got home but otherwise fine, it's going for a 24 hour dunk. Holes have been untaped and hoping to get a nice second flush out of it.
The largest PFC fruit I've had to date (74g wet - pictured in my post above) turned out to be 10.2g dry:

Very happy with the first flush so far in my second tub and with the mini MSG concept overall.
Edit: Regarding humidity and room air, I am certainly aware that my grow area (and heating bill as I do run a furnace) will benefit from a humidifier, and plans are to get not one but two for either end of our home, to ensure even humidity throughout.
That being said, currently RH in my grow area is 25% which is way low, but with two to three heavy mistings per day (not to the point of soggy, and allowing to dry slightly in between mistings) I have seen quite reasonable performance so far.
My 14 gallon monotub on the other hand maintains a high level of humidity inside and fruits quite well and seems to be a more appropriate FC design for my grow area. I just love the convenience factor of the mini MSG though. To quote Doc_T, "I totally just pick them up by the handle."

I would have picked sooner (normally pick when the veil breaks) but it was not possible this time as I was out of town for a funeral.

hey Doc_T
I have 2 of these same exact tubs going right now.. only i didnt use the same hole layout. i made them ohmatic fashion, with 4 holes 1.5" on each side. one tub is 80% colonized, and the other i just mix the spawn and bulk yesterday. I plan on using these really bright touch led lights that have double sided tape so i can put them under the lid. I know theyll be plenty of light. i was just wondering if you had any tips for me to get a good pinset and flush. also how did you dunk the sub after harvest? and should i be misting at all? just wondering whats worked for you or things you mightve done differently. thanks in advance

Oh, I never got an ohmatic-style tub to work right. Sometimes I could get some fruits, but nothing impressive. Take out the polyfil, drill more holes, then mist it well as needed, about once a day.
Is my advice.

First is the picture of an unused tub. I have them on a stand about 2' high to prevent me from kicking shit into them (hopefully). Thought I'd throw a pic of the bulk pasteurizer in there for good measure. Everything is going swimmingly! Two tubs are 5 qts WBS, another is 5 qts cracked corn. All are taking off at an alarming rate! I'll keep you posted

so just leave the bigger hole taped and drill small ones everywhere? and how often would you mist? i bought a spray bottle but i dont want to go overboard, just one or two sprays a day?

I'd leave the holes open. Mist well, once or maybe twice a day. But really wet it, don't be shy. Spray it down.
Now, if you live where you are running a furnace, you may need supplemental humidity. It'll make your place feel warmer and cozier, it's good for you as well as the mushrooms to run a humidifier on a timer.

Doc_T-I must say I admire your efforts, and have decided to try to use your tek.
Attached I have pics of 5 different tubs, the one with the lid on I have already removed from it's bag. The others I have not, I wanted to seek opinions from the members on here.
Also what temp should these boxes be left in after removed from their bags. Thanks
BOX 1-Already taken out of the bag
 BOX 2
 BOX 3
 BOX 4
BOX 5-Call this the bastard box, 4 different strains...for testing.
Should I hold off a bit till I take these out of the bags as well? Thanks in advance
