Definitely a point in favor of mechanical timers over digital- reprogramming this thing pretty much sucks. 20 on/off settings is nice and flexible, but it's tedious.
Like I've said before, I've seen mechanical ones at wal-mart that have on/off settings every 15 minutes and they were only like $8.

I've got one (from non-WM source), but 15 mins is a bit too long. I'd really like a repeat cycle timer, but they are soooo spendy. I'm going to end up building one some day, I'll post a tek when I do.

Too long for what? An ultrasonic? Seems to me that it would be easy to pipe an ultrasonic through a butterfly valve to allow granular control on the amount of humidity it can pump through rather than going and buying an expensive timer. If backpressure is a worry you can modify your hose at the ultrasonic end to compensate for that too.
Or am I way off with all of this?

I just put the ultrasonic inside the greenhouse. I *can* build stuff, I'm good at it. But I have a tiny budget and an even tinier apartment. I don't have any place to build such a thing. But I think I can build a repeat cycle timer with a timer IC and a relay for about $5. I'll post when I do, I promise.

Interesting... I am very interested into automated systems right now. How would you use a butterfly valve with an ultrasonic?

I was referring to using it with an external ultrasonic that you run through a hose to the greenhouse. If you placed a small butterfly valve inline with the hose at some point you could limit the flow of air/humidity with the valve.

is there a good tek that walks through exactly how to do this procedure?
i have 2 quarts of spawn almost fully colonized that i would like to do this with. the only thing im not sure of is how to mix the spawn and substrate and lay it in the tub. do you lay down the coir first, pasteurize with hot boiling water then let it cool and just break your spawn up in it and mix it around?
is the spawn mixed with the substrate prior to putting it in the tub?
sorry i havent read any teks other than for large monotubs, so i just wanted to be clear.
also, will pf-tek jars work good for spawn? they are pf-tek slightly modified, more brf and 25% of the verm is replaced with rabbit dung for added nitrogen and nutrients. they made awesome cakes so far, but will they work for spawn on this project?

I think I described the coir prep upthread- boil the water, add everything but the coir, reboil, then add coir and turn off. Then after it cools down, mix or layer with grain spawn. BRF cakes can certainly be used for spawn.

awesome, thanks. i have a feeling this project is going to go over well.
sorry i feel like a lazy jerk because there was a few pages i skipped reading, that is probably where you explained the preparation of the coir. i can't stand when people make me explain the same thing twice. my bad!

Thread hijack much? I thought this question was answered in the other thread- don't run this thing into your monotub. It's not needed and runs the risk of catasrophic failure.
But hey, it's your grow. Do what ever you want, and then post about it. In your own thread.

Get em Doc! Been keepin an eye on the thread and great grow man! Can't wait to give it a try, seems like a perfect project before moving onto bigger mono's.

Well, I'm not trying to be mean- there's plenty of Internet to go around.
Steve, you might try slicing the cakes into layers, disks, three or 4 per cake. Then putting a layer of coir, then slices, then coir, etc. Finish with a thin layer of coir to protect the slices.

I thought that crumbling was better than slicing since it gives you more points of inoculation.

Crumbling may offer more points of inoculation, but slicing will damage the myc less and allow them to recover faster. I guess it would depend on how many cakes you had. If you only had a few cakes, crumbling may be better, but if you are going to use lots of cakes as spawn, I would guess that slicing may be better.
I haven't used cakes as spawn though, so I really can't say.

And there we go again...
So to get back on topic, how do you use the dunk-drain hole at the bottom of the tub in conjunction with a bag? Or don't you?

Oh, I don't. Or haven't. But you also can easily tip the tub up on its side and drain it like that.

I dunno. I'm sure there's a hundred reasons each way. Use WBS, then you only have to wonder whether to mix or layer. Or mix and then layer.

Hahaha, agreed! For bulk spawn grains are the way to go.
