Also, for anyone who's wondering, I was curious to the approximate volume of this tub. With the dimensions given it's a little over 28 quarts, so 7 gallons +/- a quart.

I use 4" out of ten for the substrate, call that 6 quarts. Then the whole tub is 18 quarts.
Edit - 15 quarts.

http://www.housewaresandbeyond.com/p14801-Sterilite-1896-Large-ShowOffs-Storage-Container.html says the dimensions are 14 1/4"L x 9 1/2"W x 12 1/4"H
V = LxWxH = 14.25*9.5*12.25 = 1,658.34 in^3
1 US quart = 57.75 in^3
1,658.34/57.75 = 28.72 quarts
1 gallon = 4 quarts
28.72/4 ~ 7 gallons
I don't know how you're getting your numbers, but I'm fairly certain my math is correct here.

Are calculating based on the outside dimensions? Did you account for the fact there's a punt? Do you have one of these tubs in your lap right now, marking out where to drill the holes?
No way this is seven gallons. It's half the size of a five-gallon water jug.
($8.95? I pay $3.50 or $5.)

I do not have one in my lap but I refuse to believe there is THAT MUCH wasted space. I attempted to account for wasted space with the +/- 1 quart. Are you sure it's an 1896? Maybe that site has their dimensions mixed up (no, sterilite's website shows the same dimensions for 1896). And I don't care about the price, I was just trying to figure out how big the damn thing was. If you say it's smaller, then it's smaller. But something strange is going on if their dimensions are that far off.

Says so on the label. Go get one of these tubs, then come back here and talk about it.

I'm just trying to make sense of it all because it doesn't seem to add up. Unfortunately I don't even have the $5 to spare to buy one right now, but maybe I'll run by my local big box retailer and give it a look later today.
Like I said though, if you say it's smaller, then it's smaller, that only makes it more impressive to me to get such an awesome yield from a tiny tub.

I think the measurements are the bounding box. But you can look at the pics- the holes are drilled two inches apart, and it's a half batch of substrate.
Do go check them out at the dollar store or wherever. 1896 and 1894 also.
Edit- you can see the holes well ion this shot.

no problems keeping humidity up with all those open holes? only reason i ask is i'm considering this style tub and was worried about keeping humidity levels in check with so many holes.

No problem at all, and if it works in my climate, it will work most places. Like I said, I misted it daily, that's it. If you put an oscillating fan in the room, that may bump up evaporation, keep an eye on it for a day or two.

How many times a day were you misting? You inspired me so much that I just did a tub like this last night with 3qts KSSS to 7 quarts coir/compost/cknpoo/coffee. Put it in a bag and its sitting in my closet.
1-2 times a day or as needed. I just seen opps.

1 or two times a day as needed. Or if I just felt like peeking. Good luck on your tub- please post pics, now/later/whenever. Spawning with 3 quarts, you'll probably be ready to start fruiting in 6 or seven days.

The engineer in me cringes to think that they'd waste that much space, but I now see the rather drastic taper from the outer edge of the lid. That is a LOT of lost space so the ~2 gallon discrepancy we were having isn't so insane upon closer inspection.
And after a minute or two of thought the reason for the drastic taper sets in, so they can fit within one another.
Aaanyhow, it's a wonderful hybrid design you've got there and I can't wait to see more folks implement it.

"That's not a bug- it's a feature!"

Edit- the inset on the sides is also side handles. But the top handle works well enough if you just have mushrooms growing in it.

Well if it's just lyin' around doing nothing then why not give it a try?! I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Well I also have coir, Hpoo, verm, ect. I would rather use up the straw tho.
Just wondering if there's any reason straw wouldn't work in a mono..
