Mini Mono Tub update w/ pics * 36
    #10713572 - 07/21/09 07:26 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

There seemed to be a lot of interest in this thing, so I figured I'd give it a thread of its own and some pics to show it off.

Here's the overview:
Tape (or paint) for bottom 4 1/2 inches, then drill 1/4" holes every 2". (Thanks RR!)
It takes a half-brick batch of coir, or a similar amount of other substrate. I use 2-3 quart jars of spawn. This particular tub has Oak Ridge growing.

Fruiting conditions were introduced on 7/8. Which is to say, I took it out of the plastic bag it had been in and set it near a window. It's in an uninsulated utility room, so it gets a natural temperature and light cycle.

No fanning at all- zero. I mist once or twice a day as needed.

Inside view. Yes, that pin is nearly as big as my thumb.

I should be able to update this again in 3-5 days, if all goes well.

It's CCV. Coir/coffee/verm. I thought I had gypsum in it, but looking back through my notes I see that I didn't get that or castings until the next day. Each tub holds a half batch, you get two from one brick.
I typically spawn 2-3 quarts of WBS to a tub like this.

More like Donald Sutherland. Only not so tall. Or handsome.

But yeah- occasional mist (you'd need even less if you had more humidity than I do) and no fanning at all. It's pretty slick.
All respect to RR for the hole spacing. I might have found it eventually, but he showed us all how to do it long ago.

They are all important.
GE is absolutely essential during colonization. FAE is required during fruiting. But humidity of the correct level is also important, all throughout the life cycle. It's a balancing act.

Depending on your local conditions, the style of tub, and your personal approach, one factor or another will be 'the most important' for you. Around here, humidity is my big issue- it's effectively a desert where I live. So my tubs dry out with unpleasant rapidity.

What is the size of your mini-tub? I am using 11 gal. containers and feel I should treat them as a mini-tub vs. a mono-tub.

I don't know it in gallons. It's the Sterilite 1896, the one that holds hanging files. I got a bunch for free, so I had to figure out how to make them work.
But like I said, it's a half batch of substrate, so 4 quarts.

Flush matured faster than I thought- I woke up to this:

Went to work, came home to:

So I harvested 11.6 ounces of fresh mushrooms, including this gorgeous cluster:
Gotta love it when the spores get all over your hand!

Oak Ridge, it is yummy. It's my favorite strain by far.
People say a cube is a cube, and I say it too- but Oak Ridge is special. I don't know if it's a sub-species, I guess the argument has gone back and forth.

Ooops... strain discussion. :sorry:

I made a couple of prints.
I'm not used to such huge caps- the prints came out juicier than I expected. I let them dry overnight, we'll see. Anyway, there's three of them here if anybody wants one. PM me.

Exactly, a hybrid design. In an affordable, common container, with minimal work to build.

It's not that I'm lazy- I can work if I need to. But for me, part of the fun of this hobby is the completely random and arbitrary aspect of it. Growing mushrooms in some tub is way more fun than growing them in an automatically controlled environmental chamber. Plus, I have a few of the tubs around, I needed to do something with them.

And... no fanning.
Put in one of those automatic mist bottles, and you could just walk away for two weeks.

It's a mid-size container, 14x9x12 inches the label says. Takes a half brick of coir.

Don't know about your monotub, the only one I grew before turned green. I've got one colonizing now, but it's just sitting here, I'm not doing anything to it.
(I just peeked- looks good.)

Spawned on 6/29, exposed to fruiting conditions 7/8, harvest on 7/22.

So... three weeks from spawn to nom?

That LC will colonize a quart in 9 days, so you could do the whole grow, from syringe to harvest, in like 5 weeks. Without really working that hard.

It's not all dry yet, but it's going to be well over an ounce when it's done.

And if you think that's good, you should see the tubs with gypsum!

Both. Grain soak water, and then more in the bulk sub. It's an ingredient, not just a conditioner. It's even more versatile than that, as this poll shows.

So you think the hybrid worked more efficient than the monotub?

I've had great results doing it monotub style, too. 1" holes with polyfil, 4 to 6 per side. I haven't done side by side trials with an isolate culture, so I can't say which is better.
But do tape or paint the bottom part of the tub, I've learned that through too many side pins.

Multispore LC, yes. I'm just building a glovebox now so I can clone some of these biggies.

This seems less messy than Ohmatic's trashbag in the tub thing.

I've done both- this one has a bag in it. But I like it better without.

Still not dry. I moved them out of the dehydrator and into the damp rid too soon. I'm not used to these biggies.

the clear tub isn't necessary though right? only a clear lid for the light to shine down through

I dunno.
RR has been on this kick recently about lighting, so I'm giving it a try. More light. Not just enough, but lots of light, good bright light 12/12. And what do you know... that dude's right. Again. I haven't run controlled isolated tests, but my observation is that yes, light helps with more than just the initial pinset.

So try the experiment- build a clear one and a dark one, see what you think.

You are exactly right about GE/FAE.
So I put the whole tub into a large bag, and twist it shut with some air in it. Then I open it every other day and let it breathe. (Some people use foil with pinholes.)

When it's ready for fruiting, that's when you introduce the FAE. Take it out of the bag, put it in a drafty room, you're done.

Edit- there's also a half-height version of this tub, some of you have seen it. I use those in dubtub style. They are much easier to manage for colonization, you can just put it in a box or something. I'll post pics in a couple of days, probably.
