Cardboard tek for P. Sub woodlover spawning help..
    #8628407 - 07/13/08 07:26 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Hey fellow shroomers!

Ive just started the cardboard tek with stem bases from Psilocybe Subaeruginosa. I started on the morning of the 11th and i couldnt help myself and looked today and it looks like myc is starting to grow already! I know it hasnt been long, but i can see colonisation all over the chips the stems were on which definately wasnt there before, and what looks like little pins of rhizomorphic myc starting to form. They were fresh so i guess it happens fairly quickly?

Anyway, im leaving it stacked in a plastic tub. I didnt really take any steps to sterilise, only sprayed the tub with glen 20 (mould, bacteria killer and hospital grade surface spray).

I need some tips on what to do after i leave it for 2 weeks. Do i just bury it outside in some woodchips and mist it everyday?

Heres what im planning:
cat litter tray

soak wood chips 24hrs

drain wood chips, place inside tray

bury colonised pieces of cardboard in soaked woodchips

cover with pine needles or black plastic sheet(garbage bag)

wait for fruits?

Hows that sound? I know temp needs to be low for subs so im thinking i can leave the tray under the house or something. Do they need a lot of light?

Ok so i just dont know what to do after you have lots of colonised myc in the cardboard. Ive tried searching and i cant find anything that covers the actual removal of myc from the cardboard to spawning the myc on woodchips?

Should i use Wiccan Seekers Woodlovers Smoothie Tek http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7485276 ; and grind up the myc in water and spread into woodchip bed for further spawning, or can i just bury the chunks of myc in the woodchips and let it fruit from there?

Also, in Wiccan Seekers tek, can it fruit directly from the box or do you need to take the spawn and inoculate it to outdoor woodchip beds?

You can just bury the colonised cardboard and woodchips together.

I believe you could fruit directly from the box providing the environmental conditions are correct.

Hmmm...

What if i left the cardboard in the bottom of the tub its in now after its colonised; take the upper layer of cardboard out, exposing the myc; place a layer of woodchips in.  ?

if i left it outside to do its work do you think it would fruit? or just colonise more.

So far from what ive learnt, it seems i can have a box of woodchips with P.Sub myc running through it and pins will come up when conditions are right. Is that right, or do you need to have the myc spawned to fresh chips to fruit?

Sorry for noob questions, im learning teks for cubes and subs at the moment so a little confusing

I think your first suggestion would work, but it may take a while to colonise as the myc is distributed throughout the chips.

Once it is colonised, if the right environmental conditions are present, it will fruit. If new chips are introduced it will continue to colonise them, rather than initiate fruiting..

That is a big help, thank you.

Ok my plan is to go with that option; taking cardboard top layer out, replacing with layer of soaked chips. I might gtab chips from the area i found them, stil undecided. I know they like pine/eucalypt chips but im really not sure whats best to buy. Anyway, so ill keep the setup in the dark and warm until they are looking nice and colonised. Then take the box outside to a dim lit/shaded/cold location and hopefully will spark some fruiting.

How long can i keep the colonised chips for? My problem is we are halfway through the season. by the time i get to fruiting stage, it will probably be spring, and will be impossible to keep cool enough for fruiting P. Subs. So if i dont make it this year, i wanna know if i can use  it for next year..

Make sure you pasteurise the chips first.

As long as you keep adding chips you could keep it indefinitely, although eventually you might run into senescence. I'm not sure how long you could keep it fully colonised though. If you have no luck this season you might be better off making an outdoor patch. With some of the colonised chips though, you could spawn them to a fresh box of chips to keep it going.

Ahh i see. So if i made a woodchip patch outside, i could mix the conlonised chips progressively into that while saving some to create more indoors.

Ok, how bout this super lazy option. What if i made a patch outside. Fill it with soaked/drained wood chips. Bury the sheet of cardboard in the patch, with top side removed showing myc exposed, say three inches deep into the centre of the patch. Question time :Will i get fruit once the conditions are right? If the season runs out will it survive the summer till the season is back again? Do the outdoor patch chips need to be pasteurised?

Orrrr, should i just stick to colonising more myc onto chips from the cardboard first(indoors), then go from there?

Not mix it in progressively, you don't want to be constantly disturbing the mycelium. More just use half the chips to spawn to an outdoor patch and use the other half to keep your options open.

If your outdoor patch colonises with no problems and you maintain it properly (i.e. keep it moist, etc), it should fruit once the correct environmental conditions are present. For subs that means wet and cold. Pasteurising the woodchips gives a better chance for the mycelium to take hold before other organisms do.

As long as your spawn to woodchip ratio is high enough, either colonised cardboard or colonised woodchips would work.

Just updating this post. I checked the cardboard again today and now im worried. I think ive got a trich infection. Little green/blue spots on some of the myc, mostly where the upper surface of cardboard touches the stem bases.. Also myc appears to be struggling, some areas dont look as healthy as others.

could it be bruising or has it gone the way of the mould?

Damn.

Oh well, ive made a lunch box sized thing of soaked woodchips torn up the cardboard and buried the pieces in there. Im leaving that outside to see if anything happens. I have a couple more going in another box which i started last night. Not gonna open that until 1 week see if i get contam'd again.

If all else fails i have azure prints on the way. Im determined to get a patch going.

if i was to follow the steps in this tek, but put the cardboard and mycelium inside a sealed jar.. would it prevent external contamination and provide enough ventilation/gas release?
