illegal to bike on sidewalk in california?

Is it illegal to bike on the sidewalk? I saw some guy who was riding a bike on the sidewalk get a ticket, but its possible it was for something else.
I live in Long Beach, and tried researching this online but couldn't find a clear answer. Anyone know?

it's illegal in most places because it poses a hazard to pedestrians, bikes belong on the roads

That's weird, it's not illegal here in Florida, you just have to abide by different rules on the road vs on the sidewalk.

The answer varies from city to city.
In Santa Cruz, California, it is legal to bike on the roads or on the sidewalks except for the downtown area. In that area they have signs that say bicycles must be on roads only due to the large number of pedestrians shopping.

Bikes are usually in the gray zone of transport regulations. While they belong on the road , many riders are not comfortable enough to cycle with traffic , and decide to get on the sidewalk where they can be a real danger : going at 5 times a pedestrian's speed on a narrow sidewalk is way more dangerous than riding in the streets with traffic passing you by.

I disagree getting hit by a car on a bike is way more harmful than getting hit by a bike when walking. Something I would like to avoid at all costs, I've almost been hit by a car on my bike because they were not paying attention and it happens more than someone on the sidewalk getting injured by a bike.

Let me be the first to point out bicycles are a major road hazzard, especially on 2 lane roads with no shoulder,I have almost had 2 head on collisions from trying to give someone on a bicycle room when I passed, now I drive like normal, maybe if people just pass them at 65 2 inches away they will figure out a 2 lane road is not the place to be on a bicycle.........
Most places out here in cali have a bike lane and I have no problem with that at all ,even in town when they ride in the traffic is fine too......it`s just on 2 lane out of town roads with no shoulder is where I have a issue with them.Thats just plain dangerous for all the people around them ,including them.
I sometimes lock my brakes up behind them on the 2 lanes ,just to help them make better decisions....

Yea I hear yea. They are dickheads too, they will crowd you into oncoming traffic with no regard for your safety at all. You can almost see the chip on their shoulder and the air of smugness as you carefully try to pass them without colliding with oncoming traffic.

NO.
Are bicycles prohibited from sidewalks? Not necessarily. The appropriate Municipal Code follows:
10.48.070 Riding on sidewalks.
A. No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within any business district; upon the sidewalks of bridges; in pedestrian underpasses; on pedestrian overpasses; upon sidewalks adjacent to any school building, church, recreation center, playground, or senior citizens' residential development; within the area south of Ocean Boulevard between the Long Beach Museum of Art on the west and Bluff Park on the east; on the northerly side of the Downtown Marina mole which directly abuts said marina, between Gangway A and Gangway P.
B. Any person riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian, and when overtaking and passing a pedestrian, shall give an audible signal and shall pass to the left of the pedestrian only under conditions permitting such movement in safety.
C. The speed limit for bicycles on a sidewalk is fifteen miles per hour unless otherwise posted. The speed limit where pedestrians are present is five miles per hour. Signs specifying the speed limit shall be placed by the Traffic Engineer in locations which will provide notice to significant concentrations of sidewalk bicycle riders or where bicycle speed problems are found to exist on sidewalks.
D. For purposes of this Section, the following public ways shall be considered sidewalks:
1. Seaside Walk south of Ocean Boulevard between Fifty-fifth Place and Sixty-ninth Place, known as the Boardwalk;
2. Bay Shore Walk north of Ocean Boulevard between Fifty-fifth Place and Sixty-ninth Place.
E. This Section shall not apply to a bicycle operated by any officer employed by the City while acting within the course and scope of his or her employment, having peace officer powers pursuant to Penal Code Section 830 or are employed in positions as provided under Sections 16.16.080, 16.08.340 and 16.08.341 of the Long Beach Municipal Code. (Ord. C-7453 § 1, 1997; Ord. C-7210 § 1, 1994: Ord. C-7204 § 1, 1994; Ord. C-7084 § 1, 1993: Ord. C-6883 § 1, 1991; Ord. C-6322 § 1, 1986; Ord. C-5911 § 1, 1982; Ord. C-5678 § 1, 1981; prior code § 3410.206).

On the bike paths cali has spent millions on to provide a safe place to ride on.......you can ride all the way to sanfran on a bike path and there are some nice ones around here that head up into the mountains........
A 2 lane road with no shoulder is not a smart place to ride a bicycle ,no matter how much special bike clothes you have on...........
Atleast they could get over to the side and not ride in the middle of the lane...........they just seem a little too brave to me......
I would never be a hazzard to others like that,it`s just not smart at all.

Yeah true.. I just used to live in the woods without a car and to get anywhere I had to bike down a 2 lane back road with ditches on the sides. Except I tried to hug the shoulder as close as possible without flying into the ditch, and people were usually courteous enough in passing. it sucks a lot more to be on the bike in that situation though, with cars wizzing past you at 60 Sometimes you have to ride on the road, but sometimes it's just dangerous as fuck.

Nothing wrong with that ,sounds like you were doing what you had to......and using your head.
Out here these morons suit up in hundreds of dollars worth of riding gear and drive thier 60 thousand dollar cars into the middle of the back roads and ride in the middle of the road like some goofball and have a chip on thier shoulder when you drive by in a car ....... You saw the bike path down in Veniece ,I ride there and there is a big bike path right next to my house that runs into the mountains and down to the beach, california has probably spent more money than any other state to provide these fools with a place to ride safely.
Yet they want to ride on a dangerous backroad with no place to do it safely and act like a speeding car will not kill them.

People passing bicyclists too close is the reason they ride in the middle of the lane on a 2 lane road.
Bicyclists will not stay off of two lane roads completely because often that is the only way to get where they are going.

I did not know this ,it sheds a little light on why this happens.
Those people that have no choice are rarity around here ....most pack the bike in on a car and choose to ride those types of roads on purpose...you can tell who they are ,because they only have a water bottle ,no saddle bags or pulling a cart with supplies behind them. I dont really have anything against those types of riders ....it`s the sunday bunch that do it on purpose.

I used to bike on the sidewalk all the time in HB. Just dont do it in the downtown area's and it should be fine. Just defend yourself by telling the truth: safety first. They should have bike trails through the park if its a cool town.
I drove by a guy who had just got killed riding his bike in the early morning Huntington Beach. Right there on Beach Blvd and Ellis--i think.
