Starbucks coffee grinds HELL YEAH !!! But one question ???
    #10699554 - 07/18/09 01:39 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

hey guys i recently called up my local Starbucks after getting a tip here to check out my local coffee shops for grinds, and man did i get alot lol .

anyways i was drying out the grounds in my dehydrator and on top rack i had some fruits that were a little open when i picked them and well spores got in with the grounds . i want to use these grounds for isolated myc strains. i was using the ohmatic mono tek were i mix 1 q of grounds with 1q of verm., 1 brick or coir and 6 q of myc . since I'm pasteurizing my bulk coir with grounds would i have to worry about the spores that got in it . i want my isolated strain to stay that way not become a multispore nightmare .

will pasteurization kill the spores ???

any help would be greatly appreciated thx guys

im no scientist but i do believe the whole idea of pasteurizing is to kill any living in your substrate, and to sterilize. although i could be wrong

well when you pasteurize you kill off the bad bacteria and leave the good bacteria that helps prevent contams.

pressure cooking will kill everything .

maybe a trusted cultivator or someone could answer this ??

will the spores survive pasteurization?

Why were you dehydrating the grounds?  SWIM just gets the Starbucks coffee grounds and just adds them into his coir when he does the pasteurization and he has little to no contams, they work great.

Those spores don't have a chance in hell at germinating on your bulk sub.  Otherwise nobody would use spawn.  You're fine.

Damn you picked up 50 lbs wow.  Throw it on cookie sheets and put it in the oven (or the dehydrator like you were doing if you have a big one) until it is completely dry and then freeze it.  You can also can it by putting it in mason jars, and PC it and keep it until you need it.

Why bother?  There's a starbucks on every corner churning out bags and bags of old grounds daily.  Just grab a fresh one when you need some sub.

Yeah thats what I was thinking too, but if he already picked up 50lbs he must live far away from one and be stocking up.  Fresh has to be better anyways and I would never store it, if I have extra I just spread it around on some of my nitrogen loving plants.

I've just found that trich LOVES coffee so I try not to let it sit any longer than necessary.  On bulk day, go pick up a bag, mix it up, and toss the leftover in the garden/yard/whatever.
