Ireland Makes Blasphemy Illegal
    #10696935 - 07/17/09 09:51 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Anyone heard about this?

Quote:

Irish atheists are horrified by new legislation making blasphemy illegal, and punishable by a 25,000-Euro fine. Christians of all stripes should be, too.

As part of a revision to defamation legislation, the Dail (Irish Parliament) passed legislation creating a new crime of blasphemy. Update: The bill went to the Seanad on Friday, July 10, passing by a single vote. This attack on free speech, debated for several months in Europe, has gone largely unnoticed in the American press.

How does this impact free speech? Just don’t be rude.

    * Atheists can be prosecuted for saying that God is imaginary. That causes outrage.
    * Pagans can be prosecuted for saying they left Christianity because God is violent and bloodthirsty, promotes genocide, and permits slavery.
    * Christians can be prosecuted for saying that Allah is a moon god, or for drawing a picture of Mohammed, or for saying that Islam is a violent religion which breeds terrorists.
    * Jews can be prosecuted for saying Jesus isn’t the Messiah.

Ireland’s Blasphemy Bill not only criminalizes free speech, it also gives the police the authority to confiscate anything deemed “blasphemous”. They may enter and search any premises, with force if needed, upon “reasonable suspicion” that such materials are present.

How asinine. Although it is common sense that you shouldn't say shit like that (or should be. Atheists seem to not give a shit), but it's not something that should be illegal.

Wow :nonono:

Does anybody know how to get ahold of the person I would need to contact (primary backer/author of the bill or w/e) to express my absolute outrage and disgust on this?

I really want to know, this is outrageous.

On top of being totally fucking bonkers, it's impractical.  If they actually enforce it their court systems are probably going to be FLOODED!

If they did that here I think I would have to at the LEAST non-violently protest with civil disobedience, or more likely fucking run rampant on government buildings with a mob riot and take political prisoners.

I hope shit goes down in Ireland over this.  I hope they flip their fucking lids, get loaded on whiskey, and start fucking burning down the Parliament.

no it's not common sense and people should be able to say whatever they please to whom they please with no consequences.  It's not the same thing as physically doing something to another person.

Why are you so outraged? To me, publicly saying shit like that on another person's religion is basically slander (or libel, if it was written).

Or are those laws evil, too?

I believe in free speech, and am all for criticizing what a church does or what people do in the name of religion, but saying really vile things about a belief isn't constructive in any way, shape, or form. Like I said, it shouldn't necessarily be illegal (because it would be really hard to enforce such a law), but it should definitely be discouraged.

Plus, they're not protecting just one religion. It's not like they're setting up an Irish Inquisition. Although, it should technically  also say you can't say atheists are cowards who have too much of a selfish ego to accept that there may be powers beyond our seven senses.

Dude did you read the fucking article and the legislature?  This is a free reign warrant issue for anybody.

And a €25,000 fine is equal to $35,350 (USD).  I dunno about you, but that's more than my current annual income.

This just turned Ireland into a police state.

The ability of the police to search you or your house 'just because', is what has me worried the most.

Giving a person a ~$50 ticket for being verbally offensive is one thing.
Fining some one $35,000 and searching their house w/out a warrant is a bit extreme for simply saying something off color IMO.

Whats next, making racist remarks illegal? :flowstone:

Nononono. See, first it's religious remarks, than it's gonna be the same for government. Start off with something smaller, than slowly work your way up to stop them from bad talkin the power

Just because they make a law here,it doesn't mean it will be enforced.

It will be no different. I'd imagine this is a measure taken just so they can actually arrest someone who is right out of order, you know, abusing someone randomly on the street like,"What are you looking at,you Muslim cunt?"

I suppose there is still a lot of intolerance and this is just a measure to combat it.

It's also illegal to leave your dog crap on the street without picking it up,which can result in a 150 euro fine. They are just silly laws to keep people happy but they are never enforced.
