I just made a monotub and didn't see anywhere if I swhould be leaving it with a tight trashbag so no fae occurs through the polyfill and the bag will keep it in the dark. Or do i just leave it in a dark place w/out the bag? this has probably been answered just couldn't find it.

are you talking about putting plastic wrap over the top of the substrate until the mycelium is ready to start pinning? ive never done a monotub but i think they do that to build up moisture within the substrate while not providing the substrate with adequate FAE to start pinning until its ready
not quite sure though

no I was talking about putting the whole tub in a trash bag so there isn't much fae. I just talked to a friend and he said to cover it with the trash bag so that's what I'll do.

Cut some slits all over the garbage bag (but make sure you cut up the bag so you don't have two layers of plastic or it will slide around blocking the holes) and place a strip of micropore tape over every hole. place this sheet of holy plastic on top of the substrate till the myc has stiched itself together and fully colonized then remove the plastic, add 12/12 light cycle, and mist.
I've read a lot of people do it this way. I'm a noob though so don't just take my word for it.

tape the holes up while colonizing, maybe leave poly fil in one or two nicely tightly packed. you dont want FAE while colonizing.

You can just cut slits in the garbage bag without worrying about taping them up. Pasteurized bulk substrates don't need to be kept sterile, so there is no need to filter the holes. Don't over do it on the slits as you want to maintain high CO2 levels, while giving some gas exchange.
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: Sterilization kills all life forms. After sterilization, you need to keep the substrate under sterile conditions until fully colonized or it will contaminate. That's why we use filter patch bags or jars with filters.
Pasteurization only kills fungal spores, leaving the beneficial bacteria intact. After pasteurization, the substrate need not be kept sterile, so it's suitable for bulk substrates such as straw and manure that are too big for filtered jars. RR
