Ralphster's Z-Strain (Grow) * 2
    #10688145 - 07/16/09 03:23 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

A few months ago I ordered a Pan Suphanburi syringe from Ralph and also obtained the SOTM: (Z-strain) Tho I haven't did anything with the Pan syringe yet, I got right to work with the Z-Strain. Since it was a free-bee and I originally didn't have any plans for it, I just kinda started frivolously inoculating stuff with it  To my surprise, this shit was ravenous. It fully colonized some quart jars in about <10 days or so. That's allot faster then any other strain I've worked with before. The mycelium growth never seemed to look monokaryotic (Cottony) it was full on HEAVY rhizomorphic from the start... I spawned it to:

40% straw
20% lightly composted cow poo
15% Coir
10% Verm
5%  Coffee
5%  Gypsum
5%  Earthworm Castings

It fully colonized my bulk in about 5 days... I was skeptical that that inside might not be fully colonized so I gave it until day 7 before I birthed it, and put it into fruiting conditions.

Its dominance didn't stop there. When it came time it laid down a superb pinset. I take account for my cultivation skills, and I normally have uber pin-sets, but this strain just seemed to make life ALLOT ezer.

Pin-sets:

A few days later, the pin-sets were looking even better. check it out:

Here are some various stages of life:

I noticed a few shrooms come out from underneath the edges of the substrate, so I peeked underneath... I had mushrooms zerging my Martha from every direction possible:

I don't know of too many people that have respectable pin-sets from underneath there subs as well  Here are a few Pictures snapped right before harvest.

After experiencing cultivation with this excellent strain, I have deemed it my new favorite. I can't leave out a trip report ! This strain was more on the visual side of the spectrum for me. Allot of people will just say its all in your head, and that all shrooms give the same trip. Typically most strains just seem to give a body high. It takes a respectably potent strain to give good visuals. the strongest body high I get are from my Texan strain, but they don't give good visuals. Some prefer a body high, and others love the visuals. Z-strain gave a, "good" body high, and excellent visuals. The come down was awesome. With most trips I always feel exhausted when I come down, but the Z-strain was more reluctantly peacefully.

The meaning for this post was to mainly give props to Ralph. Thanks for the top of the line products, and excellent customer service to boot.:thanx: Hope the rest of you guys enjoy the post, and consider trying out the Z-strain with genetics that only Ralph can offer.

If I may ask, what was your spawn. As well as your spawn to bulk ratios?

Amazing I see the sub depth to only be about 3-4 in. that is a great harvest with you're sub...I've been using sub depths of 5-6in. maybe I should go lighter on the depth...did you use allot of spawn for each tray?? what would you consider you're ratio?? Thanks and excellent Job.....e

I use WBS. I use 2-3 pints of spawn per tray. My trays are 14x12 cat litter pans and I only go about 3 inches deep with the sub. You can obtain larger mushrooms via more sub, but my general choice for sub depth is to obtain a depth that is just large enough to retain enough water to support a good harvest. Large mushrooms can be cool, and something to desire, but I personally enjoy the potency of small mushrooms. Since mushrooms grow via cell expansion apposed to cell division your just deluding your potency with a larger mushroom. (2 grams of tiny mushrooms are going to be far more potent then one 2g mushroom). Long story short: I have found 3 inch sub depth to be just right for me. Then again, some say what works for one person doesn't always work the same way for the next. I have tested sub depths as small as 1 inch, and I will say performance was lacking, but very minuscule. Also, I think if your going over 3-4 inches in sub depth, your just waisting time for the mycelium to colonized un-needed amounts of substrate. I prefer to get to fruiting conditions as quick as I can, as they say, "Time is Money", and that mycelium isn't getting any younger. The older you mycelium is (Even days) the potentially lacking growth performance may be. This is all in my opinion based off of my experience with mushroom cultivation, and some others may beg to differ what I say.

Just throwing this out there Boris.  I love the way you handle your cakes. for fruiting on the sides.  I see you have a nice closet with metal rod shelves.

I did a grow with a suspended cake... and tons grew out of the bottom.  Haven't done it again, but I wonder what would happen if you just set those cakes on the wire racks instead of on-top of those trays.  I bet you would see fruiting on 360 of the cake.  Might be worth a shot.

I plan on doing the 360 thing again because I got a huge yield increase with the bottom surface area.  What do you think?

Well, my method is bulk, not cakes. They aren't mono-tub scale(Big), but there not cake(small). just some 12x14ich cat litter trays of bulk. they fit into my Martha(Greenhouse) more uniform/orderly.

Yeah, I can't take full responsibility for that tray prep method:

EXAMPLE:

After I started doing it, I was notified that Hippychick Had did it first.

Ok, I'm not sure what to call bulk cakes, except cakes.  Is there another word for bulk tray colonized substrate?

Anyways, what are your thoughts on fruiting your "bulk" on just the metal bars and not the solid trays underneath, thereby opening fruiting area on the bottom?

I don't mean to be a smart ass, just a matter of semantics.  Not knocking your grow either... love your tek.  Should be getting some Z in the mail this week, so good timing; i'm excited now!

Oh yeah, I have thought about sitting the whole bulk slab directly on the racking to get a 360 pinset, but I then thought about taking it out to harvest. figured it might be awkward taking it out or harvesting them without them sitting on some portable tray or something. Some times I just sit the slabs on sheets of thick plastic (Cut from old monotub lids) if I need the tray itself for more bulk projects, but I seldom do because I have allot of trays. Perhaps You could buy some oven racks or something along the lines to set the trays on for when the time came to harvest you could pick the slab up by the additional rack.

I love it man.  Oven rack, or any "grid" like thing you could use as a support.

When I did the 360 thing, I wasn't really expecting fruiting on the bottom, but got huge yields from the bottom.  I want to do it again SOOOO bad.

I used sheets of plastic trellis (the stuff rose bushes and vines grow up) the size of my bulk cakes.  They were kinda flimsy, but enough to provide bottom support. And, there was some damage to some of the bottom fruits while wiggling the thing out of the tub I grew it in.  A wire oven rack or something would work perfectly.  Give it a try...  I'll send you a print or something!  Your grow is exciting!

I like your grow. I've been working with Z's from the start. I have isolated a nonsporilating strain that is almost albino at times but I do agree that the trips are very visual. How do you handle the spores on your subs and how are the 2nd and 3rd flushes?

2nd was JUST as good as the first, but I moved by the time a 3rd was gunna come. so by then I shut down my projects for the move. (Threw the subs out) Some times I will keep a sub past a 2nd flush just to learn something or just for fun. Typically i throw my subs out after a 2nd flush because after the 2nd the performance generally starts to lessen, and I have an issue with potency. Generally a 3rd flush isn't worth my time or space in my Martha.

What I mean is does the spore load effect the 2nd flush by clogging like it does with a casing.

never herd of that honestly, nor have I seen any problems that I can say resulted from it... Its not really something you can totally avoid. I notice some people like to pick there shrooms right before they tear there veil to avoid spores, but most of the time there are a few shrooms in that flush that like to mature allot faster then the rest. In attempts to avoid spores everywhere you would have to pick your shrooms far immature. I don't feel there is any issue with spores being dropped onto the sub surface, but I'm sure that some one feels they have factual information on why they beg to differ. Not trying to come across as a D-bag to your post reply, just saying I don't think that's an issue in mushroom cultivation, ...or at least not for me ?

Boris thank you and give Bullwinkle my regards. As you said some people would argue the spore load issue glad to see some one that hasn't made a huge diff on yield. Oh and don't worry I'm sure there's a few people that think I'm a D-bag lol on this site. Peace
