primus strikes me as a band that's pretty hard to get into. i started to listen to them a little bit with "too many puppies," which i liked a lot, and then by switching over into les claypool's solo projects. i really like his new CD. i honestly didn't think music could sounds so weird and out there...yet still be awesome.
the rest of primus' stuff is just a little too far gone for me though. they have so much material that i don't even know where to start. anyone want to recommend me a few of their better songs?
i like...
too many puppies those damned blue collar tweakers tommy the cat mr. krinkle
but i downloaded pretty much their whole discography

Frizzle Fry is a fine album. Oysterhead & the Frog Brigade's Purple Onion are both pretty easy side-projects to get into.

I thought his newest album was horrible, actually.
I honestly can't see how anyone could enjoy listening to it.
If you downloaded the discography, then listen to it. There are a lot of good songs on there.

They all equally suck.
Listen to the albums Frizzle Fry and Pork Soda all the way through, that'll give you a good feel for their earlier stuff. Tales from the Punchbowl is their most commercial album, some hate it but give it a try as well (Professor Nutbutter, Over the Electric Grapevine, others). The "Antipop" album is also worth a listen.
Try to get some live shows from the Hallucino-Genetics tour.
You're right, their music is a bit inaccessible for most people. I celebrate their entire catalog , but these might help you get a feel.

Listen to Frizzle Fry a bunch. Throw in a few spins of Seas and Pork Soda now and again and a dash of Punchbowl to taste. Suck on this makes for a nice side on occasion.
Forget about Brown or any of the albums with Brain. He's a dingleberry on Herb's left buttcheeck and anyone who tells you otherwise is a small man. Antipop's sort of a fun listen though.

Wow, that was an incredible show. I went in with (somewhat) lowered expectations, because obviously seeing Primus with Herb and Lar would be fucking nuts, but i was thoroughly impressed. Highlights included:
full version of Southbound Pachyderm Rumble of the Diesel Of Whales and Woe Cosmic Highway (real nice tabla solo) Up on the Roof and a real treat: the first verse of Tommy the Cat followed by a short Wynona's themed jam. ...other good numbers from the evening, but I'm having trouble accurately retracing the events of that lovely evening... ...Shit! how could I forget when Eugene (of Gogol Bordello) came on stage for a little local oompah-pah.
and of course the bass and percussion solos were fantastic.
