A company called MycotaPro is establishing a web site where they can be purchased, along with lots of other nifty exotic bulk/mush/cult items -- at reasonable prices. But, they are not on-line yet. Company rep told me, the site will be up & running in about 10 days.

I like using 'straight' supplers if possible. No spores on the site, no mention of illegal activity. FP seems to do a good job, but I'd just as soon avoid any reference to shrooms.

sounds very promising.  Will the company you mentioned be carrying such supplies (biodegradeable bags)?    I suppose that since you are using cable ties the bags can be reused for a while then. Is this correct?
Actually glass will biodegrade, in a sense.  Most commercially available glass is silicon dioxide (made from purified molten sand).  If you crush it up and expose it to the environment it will lose its sharp edges and essentially be .. sand.     Not so much biodegrade as change shape.

High ST,

I tryed to hotclue the filterpatches to the ovenbags and as it seems it is working well! Gonna fill one up like you did with grass seeds and inoculate it.
When all goes well I will get a nice bag of beans

The best way is to use a PVC pipe,a few inches long, and about 1inch around.Pull the bag through the pipe all the way to the grain.Stuff polyfil in the pipe, make sure the polyfil does'nt hang out of the bottom.Cut the top of the bag and tape it around the pipe.Put foil on top.Pressure cook with rags around it.The PVC will not melt and it makes a filter that works as good as any. Also, kitchen supply stores have smaller ovenbags that come on a roll . I think they are chicken size.

Don't mean to contradict you.. :smirk:.. but your WRONG.

PVC pipe will shink, shrivel -- MELT at @15 lbs pressure & 250 F in a PC for 60 -- 90 minutes.

This bag type method requires using automotive type heater hose as a bag neck. It will not melt. You can buy a few feet of it at any auto parts store -- cheap. Then, just cut it into 4 or 5 inch peices & use it instead of pvc pipe.

You ever read the 7 step directions on a Reynolds oven bag?

Step 2 directs you to shake one tablespoon of flour into the bag: this protects against BURSTING.

Step 5 directs you to make SIX (6) ........ :shocked:1/2 inch slits  :shocked:in the top of the bag. ................To prevent BURSTING.

THE RESULTING OVEN BAG HAS LOTS OF HOLES IN IT.

Hmmmmmmmmm. >>HOLES<< .........Not good for sterilizing things.

A filter/patch autoclave bag, is the way to go. As in ........... no holes & it breaths through the filter/patch, so it will not BURST.

SixTango, do not punch holes in bags with grain in it. They almost indefinately contaminate. Instead buy a filter patch. They are dirt cheap. This idea has been around for a while, but recently I've seen more popularity on the forums since a number of spore vendors have been selling them presterilized lately. As for melting, I don't know about the oven bags, and other cheesy bags you can get from walmart, but I got some spawn bags from mycosupply and they were really heavy duty for plastic. The idea is not to play football with them. Just inoculate them with whatever microscopic spores or mycelium you are intending to grow, and put them away in a dark container. I don't even look at mine until at least 2 or 3 weeks after inoculation. Remember, a watched pot doesn't boil. The more you play with them, the more risk of puncture you are giving.

LOL, PsiloSteve............

You might take the time to notice who started this thread & what was stated in the 1st post. The bags the raccoon uses are purchased wholesale, by the thousands, straight from a manufacture. Not a reseller.

Here is just a small example of just a few filter/patch autoclave type bags, I use. 6T

Sixtango, those really look nice if you get them cheap. You really get them by the thousands? If you don't mind my asking, about how much do you pay per at that quantity? It's no sweat if you don't want to say, it definitely looks like you have a sweet source for them. Hopefully this is the same source that you mentioned earlier in this thread, the one coming online soon? I really like the look of that big fat bag pictured on the bottom, too cool. But the long ones look like they might stay away from the edges of the pressure cooker better. Have you ever had any problems with the edges touching and melting? Or will those bags simply not melt in a p/c? Thanks so much for starting this thread, I have only used the bags once (thankfully bought from MycoSupply, so they worked great) and am learning a ton. I'm also very glad to have heard about someone who uses a simple iron-sealed closure. Peace and thanks......

I would not suggest anyone try to seal an autoclave bag with a household iron. It can be a melting messy fiasco.

For those without a good impulse sealer.

There is an easy -- cheap way to seal autoclave bags. It's so obvious, it must go right past almost everybody.

:laugh:BUTCHER TWINE  ..... as in a 6 or better ply heavy duty cotton string.

Anybody who can tie their shoe strings in a tight ass knot  can do the same to an autoclave bag.

You can find butcher twine in most large grocery stores, it only costs a few bucks for a 500 foot roll & that is enough to seal over 1000 bags -- easy.

Yo....MM

You might have posted what you are talking about. Because your ~~ out of the blue ~~ post here, does not make sense, otherwise. Unless your sole purpose is simply to start a public pissing match, which I am not about to do.

You imply I have been "dishonest" with you. The facts of the matter are: I simply chose not to do "business" with you. Who I do "business" with, is a choice I have the right to make & I think everyone would agree with that. Someone local, I trust & can work well with came along that, was more than willing to vend my custom formula mushroom compost. That's life.

You must also think you are some sort of all knowing genius, proclaiming to "give up" a source where you think I may acquire autoclave bags. LOL, anybody capable of using a search engine can find multiples of suppliers of autoclave bags of all sorts, types & sizes. Given that all who post here are Internet connected, any one of them can find those sources, if they simply take the time to look. Moreover, I posted that same source, long long ago ................right here. So, it's no big secret, like you put on.

As for sources of autoclave bags, anyone who looks will find numerous companies beside the one you mention. Here are just a few US companies & there are many more -- worldwide.

http://www.associatedbag.com/product_index.cfm

http://www.clearviewbag.com/Page-new2.cfm?nNumber=8

http://www.bellcoglass.com/intl/2200.htm

http://www.rpicorp.com/index.php?t=labequip&cat=57&id=901

http://www.tycoplastics.com/site/content/institutional/institutional.asp

http://www.mgscientific.com/store/group.asp?GROUP_ID=8208

http://www.knfcorporation.com/breatherbags.htm

http://www.bettercontainers.com/autoclave.htm

Anybody who looks can also find numerous companies that wholesale all sorts of round diameter autoclavable 2 to 5 mm rubberized polypropylene in several thousand foot rolls, to make your own bags from. As well as the filter material to apply to them, if you want to make filter/patch bags.

Anybody can also find the wholesale source of almost every product your site sells. And, in doing so, learn the degree of mark up you attach.

So what? Who cares? I don't.

Wow, shit gets wild around here sometimes. Sixtango is right, a vendor of such supplies has no reason to be in here if not from the start and with valuable information. I was asking Sixtango obviously, not some vendor who happens to sell 1 variety of bag for a big markup. Give up his source? It seems clear that it was well known what his source was, and sorry Sixtango for not taking more time to look back and try to find it in the archives. I just really appreciated what you had previously written in this thread and trust what kind of bag you use personally; because it is obvious that you know what you are doing and know all there is to know about these autoclavable bags. So, having learned all this (I will definitely be ordering from those guys once their site is up, and then down to the grocery store for twine) stuff I didn't know about bags, I just have one final question. What sizes do you favor for spawn and casing sterilization? For casing materials I imagine you would just use the biggest that will fit in the p/c, but what about for the spawn? I see that the Unicorn brand has 3 different sizes in standard sizes for the upright bag,
8 x 5 x 19, 5 x 4 x 18, 4 x 3 x 14 ;
do you use any close to those sizes? Thanks again for the info...
