Here is the way to go. 2 Liter filter/patch bags. These make quart jars, lids & filter disks ~~~~~~>  prehistoric.

Here is one filled with a millet -- milo -- rye grain mix. They work perfectly  for syringe innoc & G2G transfers. 6T  :tongue:

Could we be looking at the growing wave of the future. I'll bet we are. I've been meaning to give these a try, but I jsut hat the thought of moving away from my wonderful glass jars. Ah, glass. Will you ever cease to amaze me?

thats cool and i bet they are cheaper than quart jars but......i bet that jars will still cheaper in the long run. why would you not want to use someting that is reuseable over and over and over again as aposed to the bags witch you can use maby 3 times....still cool though for those wishing to start up cheaper or wanting to exparament.

Plastic has a bad habit of melting or getting destroyed by heat. For the reason I have passed up many fine plastic jars, glasses and containers. Even boiling water causes plastic to deform within 10 seconds. PCing them would make a liquid mess on the bottom of PC

Read the damn post before you post your arbitrary rubbish.
These are autoclavable ovens bags, they are perfect for pcing.
They don`t melt at all.
They infact work very well.
Read the post and learn a bit about bags before you say they will melt.

Dude, please don't speak when you don't know what your are talking about. Many vendors offer autoclaveable bags, that means they can be sterilized. C'mon man, you are just setting yourself up with comments like this.

(and don't worry shrooms44, it would be zip tied after it has been pced. no melted plastic)

What I still like on jars though:
They are reusable, easyer to shake(at the begining stages of colonisation) and less prone for punctures :wink:

and environmentally friendly.. From what I have read there are not any biodegradable bags out there yet. Hopefully I am wrong though.

its not too bad to mix a bag up, but your right anno, they puncture easily.
i dont like them because they are so hard to seal completely.

Hey 6T, do you really use these on a regular basis? I've tried three times using filter patch bags with rye, and I've gotten contams every time. I've never had a contam problem using glass jars.
I'm gonna try it using birdseed and see what happens.

Well, I never filled my bags up that much but I never had any contamination problems.. I would seal the bags by using an iron directly on the plastic.  I could get a perfect seal in 15 seconds or so.. The ties are a good idea. That would allow you to reuse the bags a time or two.  Additionally, I had a problem with the grain drying out in glass jars.  I never had that problem with bags, presumably because the filter was a lot smaller than it was on the jars.  (Edit: "the" not "he"  :grin: )

i just started a birdseed on the other day, no signs of growth yet, but i'll keep you posted......im trying to figure out if you can shut them with a zip tie like the picture looks...???

Not all polypro bags are made the same, nor are all polypro cable ties. The cable tie is a high temp one, made of the same polypro -- the bag is.

This bag could almost be used as a football. That is how tough it is. Drop this bag on a concrete floor & it will bounce. A glass jar would break. This bag is as easy to "shake" as a quart jar, at any stage of colonization.

Given reasonable care, this bag will not melt, nor will the cable tie. Both are autoclavable to 260 F. You just have to have the right spec bag & tie.

The cable tie is nice to close a bag with. If you do G2G transfers, you PC the bag without it (held closed with a clip), allow he bag to cool to room temp, do the transfer & seal it with the locking tie, in an instant.

As for biodegrading. In the near future, you will see a UV biodegradable autoclave bag on the market. Glass will not biodegrade.

Shipping weight is also a factor.
