colonizing straw
    #1068044 - 11/20/02 12:11 AM (14 years, 24 days ago)

i was thinking of trying wheat straw out and was wondering if you can let the straw be completely colonized by the mixed mycelium before birthing, this might sound stupid but I'm only asking because I've seen people grow fruits from straw that is only partially colonized.

It is best to let it fully colonize and then case it.

mycelium isn't as susceptible to contams, it fights them off. whatever isn't colonized it that much more prone to molds and stuff.

well the robot plans on putting it in his pod not casing...and also i plan on pasturizing the straw first and doing my best to prevent contams. thanks

most the time i've found mycelium doesn't colonize the straw as dense as you think it would be. not near as dense as a cake

but it would colonize enough to hold together? i think i know what u mean i've seen staw colonized to where u can see the staw still but it all held together by the mycelium. also another question, i'm assuming any fully colonized cake could be used...not just grain? thanks again for the replys.

so you're making straw cakes for your pod?

hmmmm, i'd expect too much water would be wicked into it.

np    , this might be a question only answerable by calling around but does anyone know if wheatstraw can be bought in amounts smaller than a bale?  avg prices? and also as ^above^ it'd be to just crumble a cake instead of using colonized grain? i supposed you'd just have to crumble it to a similar consistancy. thanx again

Uh, just do it.

Seriously.  Mix cube spawn with straw.  Wait.  Trip.

This is Penis Envy on straw:

Good luck,

whats the difference between sterilizing the straw verus just hydrating it. i really mean does sterilized straw run risk of more contams than just hydrated straw.

The most important things are to place a weight over the straw as it colonizes to keep it tightly compressed, and to make sure it's properly chopped/shredded before pasteurizing..  If you had bumped a more recent thread you'd probably have read that straw usually performs better uncased.

You might find the straw pasteurization video clip and the straw projects video clip helpful, where straw logs and laundry baskets are demonstrated.
