Mature Mushrooms for spore print? Dry and gnarled?

How do I know if a mushroom is mature or not so that I may do a spore print? One source has said that spores should readily fall when mature but...I thought the spores were microscopic - how would I tell? There has also been talk that if the mushroom looks 'dry and gnarled' it's probably gone bad - is there any truth to this? how would I know if the variety just happens to look that way at a certain stage of it's growth?

Even tho spores are microscopic you'll still be able to see them when there is a lot coming out of your mushrooms. It'll look like a lot of dark stuff in your FC. They start spreading spores a bit after the veil opens. You could even print a mushroom before the veil breaks by cutting it open right before it opens and placing that cap on whatever you plan to print.

not long after the veil breaks is the best time to print as theres a bigger chance of being sterile as not much air has got to it yet.
I tend to wait till the caps open and flaten out a bit, you'll still get a sterile print if your technique is good.
You tend to get a nicer print from the flatter open caps.
No matter when you do it, give the prints 24 - 36 on the foil if you want impressive killer dark prints.
Then take cap off give another 24 to dry, then i like to fold it all but one side and put in tupperware with desiccant to make sure its properly dry.(over night should do it)
A good print from start to finsh should take about 4 1/2 days.
good luck.

Mushrooms are ready to print once the veil tears completly and the cap starts to flatten out. Spores are microscopic yes, but mushrooms drop millions of spores and when the collect they become visible, you will see it on the stem where the remains of the veil is, it will start to turn purple. When you see that, its definatly time to start printing.

This has been left too late, spores dropped everywhere

Herers 1 that is ready for printing, veil torn and the cap flattening out
