Trying some german imported beer.

This jewish deli near my work has beers from all over the world, and I picked up these two German beers at about $6 a bottle! I've never had anything really authentic but the one says it's been in business since the 1300's so it's gotta be good!

Any experience with either? I haven't cracked one yet.

There is no real good German beer availabel in america.

American regulations on beer, prevent the good shit from being imported.

This Augustinerbrau is amazing... it's so.. dark its hard to explain. Has a slight molasses aftertaste, kind of like plum pudding.

It's the only place in the area that has imports. Check out their list.

The regulations that are put on American beer are atrocious.
Go to Europe and try some German Parkbrow (sp) the average alcohol content, in Germany, is +20%. (for the Christmas ale)
Much higher than the American standard of 7%

Before opening this thread I was gonna recommend Celebrator Doppelbock. Good choice! I also recommend Aventinus Weizenbock of you can find it. Look for the purple label.
And to the person that said you can't get good German beers in the US... that's bull. I've been to Germany and, yeah, some of the draft beers available there are outstanding but some of the German beers that can be found at a well stocked liquor store in the US can really match up. Both the beers I mentioned (Celebrator Doppelbock and Aventinus Weizenbock) can be found in the US and are rated in the top five among all other German beers at beeradvocate.com.
I know, I sound like an advertisement but I just like German beers and want people to know that if you poke around a little you can find some excellent German beers right here in the US.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. German beer in general is quite 'un'strong in fact. 90% of all German beer can be broken down into three categories: Lager, wheat beer, dunkel. They have some random other kinds such as Kolsch, smoke beers, strong dark beers such as optimator or the best of the doppelbocks IMO the Celebrator. Those 'strong' doppelbocks are around 7-8%. Show me any German beer that is close to 20%, please. Americans make beer in general far stronger than Germans, shit Ive had a 20+% American beer from several different breweries. The Germans make good beer, but not great beer. Personally I was bored of German beer after about a month of living there. Almost all their beer is homogeneous. The UK and America know how to brew some damn beer.

Augustiner Edelstoff is my favorite German beer but nothing could ever compare to an Augustiner I drank at the Oktoberfest.
