thoughts are killing you? isnt that a thought itself?
the idea you have of yourself is suffering from other ideas it has about itself
start with the first thought, the idea of yourself
before every thought theres the thought "I"
root out that first thought & the rest have no oxygen to survive on
simply keep your attention on "I"
btw if you numb your thoughts by watching tv or mindlessly 'doing things' your actually adding millions of more thoughts to yourself subconsciously, your not solving anything, buddha didnt transcend his mind by watching tv, you sit still & watch the minds tricks...
'dont let society brian wash you, watch tv!'
thats the WORST thing you could do!

I am in the same boat, and it can get hectic, especially when it is all to new. I've always been a different thinker because of art. ha if that makes sense.
Meditation, Reading, Painting/Drawing, Running, School, Friends and the occasional South Park episode before sleep to sooth the mind...
and most important STAY POSITIVE

start focusing on matters at hand, i.e. in the present moment. future won't come any quicker anyway so divert your attention to things you do now.
had the same problem a few years back.

stopping thoughts is a very slow process. try meditating every day for 15 minutes in the morning, and gradually increase it. if you really try to stop your mind, you can. after the thought stops, you will feel bliss.

Are you having negative thoughts induced by drugs?

Good point. I hate TV but if my thoughts spiral out of control, sitting back with some junk food and watching a show can really turn my mind down. Movies can be good too. Music I usually tune between fully listening and half-listening while thinking or doing something else, so sometimes that's not as good as TV when I don't want to think.
I wouldn't recommend drugs specifically for that purpose because then your mind will start to crave them.
