Police: Lawyer tried to deliver heroin to prison

MEDIA — A 61-year-old Philadelphia attorney was arrested for attempting to bring suspected heroin into Delaware County prison Friday night, according to the Delaware County District Attorney’s office.
Randall J. Sommovilla, of the 900 block of S. 11th St., Philadelphia, was arrested after trying to visit and bring drugs to an inmate, Andrea Knox, of the same address, who was being held at the county prison waiting extradition to New Jersey, according to officials and records.
“He is an active and licensed attorney as far as we know,” Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green said.
Green added that Sommovilla was admitted to practice on Oct. 14, 1972, and last worked for the firm of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews and Ingersoll LLP.
Sommovilla posted 10 percent of the $25,000 bail and was released Saturday, after being charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and contraband, officials said.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Richard M. Cappelli in Concord District Court.
At 9 p.m. Friday, Sommovilla entered the prison through the visitors entrance, telling officials he was visiting a client, Green said.
He was subject to three ion scans that tested positive for drugs, and Correctional Officer Christine Brown noticed a plastic bag on the floor near his feet at that time, Green said.
The district attorney said the white powder inside small, blue packages in the bag field-tested for heroin.
Correctional officers searched Sommovilla’s Hyundai Sonoma in the parking lot, where they found three glass pipes, similar to those used to smoke crack cocaine, clear plastic bags containing white substances believed to be cocaine and three small, blue packages similar to the one found by Sommovilla’s feet inside the prison believed to be heroin, Green said.
The district attorney said bringing contraband has significant consequences.
“That charge carries with it a minimum mandatory jail time, if convicted, of two years,” he said. “That’s serious. Those who attempt to carry any contraband past the entrance … we take that seriously.”
Officials said the relationship between Sommovilla and Knox was not clear and that it was unknown why Knox had been picked up in Delaware County.
