sterilization technique
    #1066489 - 11/19/02 04:24 PM (14 years, 24 days ago)

hi, could someone who has tried this answer..... i made a honey jar and i believe it was uncontaminated but i could be wrong.... anyway i didnt really have time to sterilize a syringe properly so i just filled it with hydrogen peroxide......i squirted some of it into a cup of water emptied the syringe and then took in some of the water i then put some of this water into the jar and sucked up some of the little whitish strands that were floating around...... i was wondering if a)the mycelium in the syringe would be killed from the hydrogen peroxide b)i now have a sterile mycelial water syringe or if i had sterile water now

Just hydrogen peroxide will not sterilize your syringe, don't mean to upset you, but most likely your syringe is contaminated, do a test jar to be sure.

well

H2O2 doesnt kill the mycelium BUT it doesnt kill also a lot of other organisms. Bacteria for example dont die by pouring hydrogen peroxide. They need high temp for long periods. Thats why we use pressure cookers. If only it was that easy, that we could handle all contams with H2O2...

i was just wondering if an alcohol like isopropanol would do the job of sterility?
would it kill the bacteria ?? and if so would it kill the mycelial too

Heat will kill everything, thats why you should use it to sterilize, and yes isopropyl will kill mycelium

I guess that's what passes for an apology.

I wonder if using bleach and hot water would work?
Pulling up boiling water into a syring and allowing it to cool- and repeating several times-will usually work well.
Shoot a test jar.
