Shaking Rye Jars
    #1065534 - 11/19/02 09:36 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Here is my question -

When the wide mouth quart jar is fully colonized how do you shake it to break it up - I had one that was 3/4 colonized and then I noticed contams - So I went to dump the jar out and the white stuff stuck all together - No matter how hard I shook it was not comming loose -

So the great question is - When the jars are 100% colonized how do you get the stuff out???

Thank you for your help.

Eternal

In my experience, if you shake your jars once or twice during spawn run time (8-10days) when it's fully colonized the mycelium will not be strong enough to resist a couple beatings .

That's not the case with three or 4 weeks old jars. For that you'll need a spoon.

yeah, depending on the endospore load of your grain, shaking can be good or bad. Usually 2 or 3 shakes does it good, but with the grain I've got just now more than one shake spells disaster:crazy:

Hmm, well my shaking experience is on millet, not rye, but I shake the fucking shit out of it. Once the mycelium get s foot hold jars are shaken around every other day until fully colonized. Happens damn quick this way. From one small sectore (dime sized) to colonized pint in about 3-4 days. No issues with it as of yet. And the grain always breaks apart with out the least bit of fuss. It occurs to me that perhaps your grain is too moist resulting in a sticky situation (pun intended). In the very least it was contamination that you were unable to get to shake about instead of mycelium.

I find millet is easier to shake than rye, you just need to get the moisture content just right.

Millet hard to shake????

i might not have enough water,,, i tip my jars and the grain just rolls around!!!

it was soaked for 2 + days, and rinsed in cold water for a few minutes, then left to strain for about 30 minutes, til no more drips.. and in the jar they went!

does this sound ok!!

i tried to follow 6T's directions!
