You'll be perfectly fine, and it is a must that foil be removed, it is only there to provide a barrier from the water droplets during steaming.  The dry verm layer will be your barrier against contams.

The 60 minute boiling (steaming?)is a concern as the standard time to steam is 90 minutes to kill off contams.

Hello thanks for all the responses!

yeah I meant fruiting the shrooms, not flowering, I was just high at the time probably late at night and spacing. Glad to know light helps I can stick it in the 12/12 cycle under my 1kw hortilux.

The problem with my sterilization was just that I used a pot and boiled them for 60 minutes rather than using a pressure cooker for the same amount of time... it got very hot I hope it killed all the invaders.

So this might be really novice but does it make a difference if I leave the holes in the top of the jars covered? I covered two of the jars with foil on top and left two of them uncovered just to test. I mean doesn't the jar need to off-gas as the myco forms? but also doesn't it need to be sealed against contaminants?

lol ok dude I wouldn't put them under your 1k hortilux cause HPS is wrong spectrum but even if it was MH, it would be overkill and unless you have a great exhaust temps will rise. Use what you would for a clones or seedlings like a 100 watt daylight florescent or slightly to the blue scale like 6200. And yes you surely need light to grow nice shrooms take a look around and you'll see that shrooms grown without light in absolute darkness are pathetic in comparison.

With a pot use the videos to set up and cook for 90 minutes, no exceptions. If a pot is your method of sterilizations is a pot and not a PC then it's smart to stick to brf jars. They work just as well as WBS as spawn (just not as easy), and are recommended as the most nutrient rich substrate available for shrooms, just a bitch to break up use the large holes of a cheese grader and break up. Easy spawn in no time. Look up a coir recipe.

Take the tape/foil off and uncover the holes or just the foil if you already innoced through the tape. Your extra verm layer protects containment and yes its needs a very small amount of gas exchange (will help with collinization).

Thanks for the detailed response, thats helpful! See I thought if you're using a pot you should sterilize it by boiling for 60 minutes each day for four days in order to kill anything that may grow... I saw that as overkill, but if I do brf with a pot again I'll do 90 minutes for sure.

I was discussing this in #cultivation and discovered that 6500k fluoros would work better, I have those set up too. Do the mushrooms need a specific photoperiod or is any light good 24/0, 18/6, 12/12? being light hrs/dark hrs, each day.

Is the mycelium pure white if it does not get contaminated? I have 2 jars which appear to have some colored fuzz :frown:

yeah, mycellium should be pure white, pics would help, but any color other than white is usually a bad thing.

Well the jars that appeared to have colored fuzz now have more of the yellowish greyish greenish fuzz where it seems mycelium would br growing. I think its trying to spread and being consumed by the bacteria.

The other two jars have pure white formations, but it is still early in the game so we'll see =D. Either way there is a large difference:

the ones I left the foil on top of are uncontaminated.

I believe this is because the location my partner used to store them had standing sugar from a soda which leaked into it at some point a long time ago. The uncontaminated group was never exposed to the air from the exposed sugar and the bacteria / moldy contam got into the bad jars bcuz i never bothered to refill the holes from the needle with they dry verm.

Contamination would have most likely occurred during or prior to inoculation.  The dry vermiculite layer that you should have at the top of your jars will prevent contams from penetrating to the moist substrate below.

60 minutes isn't long enough to kill certain types of bacteria and mold, this is most likely the culprit assuming good sterile technique was applied during inoculation.

Refilling the the inoculation holes with fresh dry verm isn't necessary as you no doubt gleaned from watching the videos that were linked earlier in this thread.

If the growth in the other jars is pure white, they should be fine.  It would be very much worth your while to discard the jars containing the colored contams immediately... get them out of your house!

oh okay good idea... I didn't even think of that.

I have seen a little mold growing on soda that was sitting out for a long time before and in this case I think thats what it was.

Wow, that must be some kind of supermold or something to get all the way through an inch of dry verm in order to infect your cakes.

it made it through the verm because the needle was large guage and I didn't tap fill the holes after inoculation
