Be careful where you go!

No, I don't mean while shroom hunting, I mean while online.
Alarming new laws are being passed in the US under the guise of Homeland Security which greatly threatens the freedom and security of Americans using the Internet. It's safe to assume residents in countries which cooperate with US law enforcement will be equally affected.

The following quote is by Ted Bridis of the AP as reported on AOL News:
"The bill also provides greater legal protections for Internet providers, such as AOL or Microsoft Network, to turn over information about their subscribers to government officials during computer emergencies. If companies believe ''in good faith'' that there is risk of death or injury to any person, they can turn over details about customers - even their e-mails - without a warrant."

Don't be fooled by the phrases "Good faith" and "death or injury". These are open ended, loosesly interpreted catchalls which have great potential to be abused. For instance, what if US DEA decides citizens are in danger of "injury" from consuming psychoactive mushrooms? Think anyone on these forums might come under legal scrutiny? Bet yer ass they will! When I first stumbled onto this website my first impression was a line from an old song - "What a field day for the heat!"
That this site and others like it continue to operate unmolested [but certainly not unmonitored!] is most likely only because mushrooms are very low priority for an administration concerned with hard drugs [as well they should be!]. But this could change tomorrow. All it takes is one whacko to get their attention and lead them here.

So what to do? Well, I won't bore you with political admonishions, vote for this guy or that. Actually it's not so cut and dried anymore anyway. It's a little known fact among Liberals that the Clinton administration pushed for some of the strongest laws to remove restrictions on wire tapping and Internet survailence. Of course in the post 9/11 Bush/Ashcroft administration, all bets are off! It's safe to assume Big Brother is out there and he is watching YOU!
SO...my advice is...Be careful where you go! Don't visit websites that will be high profile to the government. That would include any and all subversive political sites, sites condoning violence, anything at all related to Muslims, far right conspiricy NWO sites, far left commie sites, sites supporting or sponsered by any revolutionary organisations, hard drug sites, kiddie porn etc. etc. Also be very very careful about participating in chat rooms in which law enforcment might be role playing in an attemt to lure people into incriminating statements or actions. Don't get on their list!
And while it might very tempting to piss and moan and lament our loss of freedom, consider how lucky we really are to have what freedom we do have. In truth, none of us NEEDS to visit any of the websites I mentioned. If by staying away from them we can preserve the freedom we've got, it's a small price to pay. Remember, a truely free society can only work if all its members take responsibility for their own actions!

Freedom is not based on needs, rather, wants (well capitol 'freedom' anyway.) Not saying that i agree with radical parties by any stretch, but this is our most basic freedom, speech.

Oh yes, I totally agree, freedom of speech is a corner stone of our society. I hate to see where the trends are leading in regards to loss of freedom in the US. Nevertheless, my point was that if we don't want the government to interfere with our freedom of speech and expression, we need to show a little common sense and discretion in how we express our selves. It's no hardship to refrain from logging on to web sites which may be flagged by law enforcement [and you can be damn sure they CAN trace you down!]. Not only is it better for you and better for the people you come in contact with [electronically or not], but it allows law enforcers to focus on the real Bad Guys.

Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose, Nothing and I say nothing if it ain't free.

Kris Kristopherson.,

None of us are free the government owns our asses 1000%.

They make laws which infringe on or right to freedomn, can arrest us without any defennse for us. f yousay fuck you to a cop see how far freedom of spreech really goes. ITs all a lie. If you vote them in power, any of them they own you and that is the bottom line.

Spinking from 62 years of living.

You know feelin' good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee"

Great song MJ. Now its stuck in my damn head.

ha ha so what you're saying is that if we don't want to lose free speech we just have to watch what we say? Dude I think that IS losing freedom of speech. Are you a cop or something? Why are you excusing the government? Sure, you may have more freedom than red China, but christ, humans deserve better than any government on this planet grants, and we citizens have to keep our eyes on the freedom prize. What the American government is doing is NOT acceptible, period.

Taking responsibility for your own actions the same as losing your freedom?
I think you mistake freedom for anarchy.
I don't defend any government, simply advocate reasonable and mature behavoir. As I said above, I deplore the loss of freedom, specifically as it pertains to use of the Internet. But I also recognize the extreme power of the Internet and the potential for it to be used for evil. Obviously my participation in this forum about [IMO harmless] recreational drugs should indicate a somewhat liberal philosophy, nevertheless, I do not believe some of the harsher stuff found online should be OK. Relevant to this discussion would be sites advocating violence or subversive behavoir. Even having said that, all I ever meant to do with my original post was to make people think about how they use the web. I don't want to see restrictive laws, I want to see rational, mature individuals decide for themselves what is right and act accordingly.

Riiiiigggghhhhht. So, basically you don't believe in free speech yeah mm hmm good work thanks. You don't think it's ok to have websites endorsing hatred, violence, etc. because it's BAD and harms people blah blah blah, but that's just your opinion. Some would say a drug information site or sex education is just as evil. Freedom of speech means FREEDOM OF SPEECH (TALKING SAYING STUFF).
