"Littering Charge" leads to pot bust, yeah right... [SC]

Man, every person I know in my region can id this fella by first and last name, and can probably say his street address off hand, he had some good ish so I, uh, hear from people....but still, just another egotistical idiot.

http://www.fortmilltimes.com/187/story/640596.html

A Fort Mill man faces decades in jail after police discovered what they described as a marijuana farm complete with a ventilation system in his bedroom, officials said.

Police seized more than 10 marijuana plants with a street value of $6,500, said B.J. Kennedy, commander of York County's Fort Mill drug enforcement unit office.

Authorities on July 3 charged Michael Christopher Katz, 25, of 2655 Holbrook Road with manufacturing marijuana, second offense; possession with intent to distribute marijuana, second offense; possession with intent to distribute Xanax, second offense and possession of Ecstasy, second offense, according to a report from the York County Sheriff's Office.

Police recovered 13 marijuana plants, Kennedy said.

“There were several that had already harvested,” Kennedy said. “The buds were hanging up and drying. This is the time of year (that) we're seeing indoor and outdoor marijuana grows.”

The medium grade marijuana plants, some which stood about 12 inches tall, would have been worth $500 each at maturity, Kennedy said. Katz also was charged with possession of marijuana, second offense; possession of Xanax, second offense; littering and open container, a second police report shows.

The charges against Katz carry a combined jail sentence that tops 51 years, Kennedy said.

The marijuana farm isn't a first for York County, Marvin Brown, commander of York County's drug enforcement unit, said. “That's the third one we found last week,” Brown said. “We found two other farms in Rock Hill and near Clover.”

The charges against Katz stem from a series of complaints about his alleged involvement in drug activity, Kennedy said. “We had received some information several weeks ago that he was manufacturing and selling marijuana,” Kennedy said of Katz, who manages several restaurants in the Rock Hill and Fort Mill area.

Those complaints triggered an investigation that reached its peak when authorities stopped Katz around 9 p.m. July 3 on suspicion of littering, the report notes.

From that, authorities found Katz in possession of a small amount of marijuana and a Xanax pill, according to the report. He also had an open container of beer, the report notes. Another person, a 24-year-old Fort Mill man, also had an open container of beer, according to the report. Authorities doled out a summons for that man, the report shows.

Almost an hour later, authorities searched Katz's home. That's where police found the marijuana farm believed to have been in place for at least three months.

“He had a small grow room in the house,” Kennedy said of the marijuana farm. “It was lit, and he had a ventilation system.”

Police found three mason jars and three plastic bags containing marijuana in drawers throughout the house, Kennedy said.

In addition to the marijuana plants, authorities seized 165 grams of marijuana, 10 Ecstasy pills, 36 Xanax doses and a digital scale, the report notes. They also recovered $521 from Katz, according to the report.

Also recovered was marijuana cultivation equipment, the report notes. That equipment was valued at $1,500, according to the report.

That gear included lights, power sources and a ventilation system, authorities said.

“They ran a ventilation system through the roof to have the marijuana smell push up and out of the house rather than have the marijuana smell stay in the house,” Brown, said. “When people are visiting, they couldn't smell the marijuana plants.”

Last week's alleged Fort Mill marijuana farm discovery is not the first time officials have made such a find, Kennedy said.

“We actually had marijuana grow [house] last year that was built under ground,” he said.

And that marijuana farm compares with the latest find, Brown said.

“They were real similar,” Brown said. “They had a fan blowing on the plants and they had a ventilation system.”

A judge set bond at $29,232 for Katz, according to a York County Detention Center official. Katz was released on bond July 4. His court date is slated for Aug. 19.

Because they can classify it as "proceeds from crime", thus the law agencies involved in the bust are  "entitled" by law to most of this money...good deal huh?

Pretty simple solution:

Don't litter
Don't have an open container

How do you go from this..

.. to this?

Someone fill in the blanks, please. I don't see how a few misdemeanors leads to a search warrant for your home. I know it's South Carolina - but still.

brennus - I was going to remark on the same thing.

On multiple occasions within the year I've seen reports of people being pulled over in traffic stops, and the police later going either to THEIR home or SOMEONE ELSE'S home, incident to that traffic stop.  How that's possible, I just don't understand.

New rule - Don't allow anyone into your home who may possibly be arrested after leaving your home.  This is best accomplished by not breaking the law.

Obviously you'd prolly not want to be breaking the law yourself.

If the cops know about ya, they got ya.  Seriously though, cops are stagnant/stationary for the most part.  Cops will not actively search you out as much as the energy you toss into the world, and the way you toss it out will come back to you in waves that will either be noticed or won't.

Won't is better, make sure it's won't.
