I would like to hear some recommendations from you guys for bands and/or musicians that can really throw it down.
Let's hear some nasty, smelly, funky grooves. Don't be shy.
I personally dig: Galactic, Soulive, Lettuce, Herbie Hancock, Medeski Martin & Wood, Lotus, The Meters, etc.

RH Factor
Joshua Redman's Elastic Band
Chris Potter
Brecker Brothers (really Michael Brecker is the good one)
Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report)
Chick Corea
There's a good start. There's so much great jazz fusion out there though. Both old and new. My friend played with some bassist last summer that he was telling me about and he played me some of his shit. God damn it was amazing. I'll have to see if I can get the guys name from him again because his fusion work was incredible.

So I don't think that video of Chick Corea actually has Chick, it's just one of his pieces.
Here's a video of his Akoustic with Dave Weckl (good but sometimes overly cheesy fusion drummer.)

Thanks a lot, jewunit.
I have been grooving to The Motet lately (jazzy but oriented around afrobeat and dance). http://www.myspace.com/themotetmusic
I can appreciate the traditional jazz time signature and the acid jazz approach, but what I really like is more melodic funk that builds upon repetition, patterns, and extensive layering.

Great call deranger on the Bill Frisell!!!!!
If you guys like jazz fusion please do yourselves a favor and check em out.. he has become one of my favorite musicians to date
Most of his projects/albums are themed, from silent film sound tracks, to country-esq, to ambiant, to jazz.
My favorite albums, because there are ton!, would be.....
Gone, Just like a Train...... Nashville..... East/West.
HQ Flac version of Gone... Gone, Just like a Train FLAC..[HMM LINK DOESNT WORK...SEARCH for "Frisell Train" at MININOVA.ORG]
BTjunkie.org has about all the other albums..8 Cd Torrent Pack And i highly recommend East/West as well HQ Flac version of East/West..Has a ROCKIN version of Heard It Through The Grapvine!
Figured I reiterate on the Frisell, as i said he has become one of my fav artists.. Enjoy!!!!

Don't know too much funk yet, as for jazz:
Miles David, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra (if you're looking for something different).
jazz fusion (some of the above can overlap, like Miles' Bitches Brew and some of Sun Ra's stuff, but mostly that man is just really unique): MAhavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Nucleus, Maneige, Weather Report

Are you saying that you're looking for something a little different than what I posted? If you can post a few examples. From what you say I think you'd really dig RH Factor (particularly the album Strength) and the Brecker Brothers. Randy isn't nearly as talented as his brother ( ), but he can rock some shit on the wah pedal.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble...check'em out on youtube
my favorite song from them is called "Balicky Bone"
Also, Ryan Leslie is sweet. More of a hip hop artist, but he incorporates many different instruments into his beats that he actually plays himself

I'm still test driving all these recommendations!
I've heard some really unique, organic and underground sounds. Thanks.

Hey, jewunit, sorry it took me a bit to get back to this thread. I think the best description, specifically when it comes to jazz/funk/soul, is that I like more cohesion in the songs. The 8 minute compositions that linger along with a lot of improvisation is a bit much for my attention span. This gets me in trouble with the "pure" jazz fans (especially with fellow musicians). As strange as it sounds, I kind of dig the commercial, polished-sounding tunes from bands like Galactic, Soulive, Lettuce, Lotus, P funk, Headhunters, some Meters, the Motet (afrobeat).
And I was recently introduced to this tasty goodness: http://www.dumpstaphunk.com/
