Better to sterilize syringe with flame or alcohol? And if flame can i just use a lighter?

Unless if it is one of those torch lighters, it will not burn clean, which means it will leave residue I believe.
Either is better than doing nothing tho. Why not flame, then rub down with alcohol?

the carbon from a dirty flame wont hurt, but i still use denatured alch in a zippo for a clean flame. Flame, then alch to cool needle and for added sterility. polyfill will melt and stick to needle if it is hot going in, which can lead to many problems, some of which compromise sterility of jars by pulling out a chuck of polyfill from 'noc site that constitutes a hole in the filter

I've almost always just used alcohol without a flame at all. Seems kind of unneccessary to flame IMO.

I flame, then whipe with alcohol, then cover the needle with the alcohol swab untill its directly over my jars innoc. hole and as quick and smoothly as I can remove the swab from the needle and penetrate the jars. I repeate this process for each jar and have never had a contam problem (with brf anyway).

sterile lab technique learned in my plant pathology lab says to dip tools in ethanol and then burn the alcohol off
that is true flame sterilization

i always try to make sure the needle is cool before i shoot the spores through though, otherwise im scared theyll burn. im pretty sure its happened to me before. so i always flame then dip in alcohol to cool it and then i insert in hole. then i do the folding it in a alcohol-damp paper towel thing and bring it over the hole and stick it in.

 .. if its a brand new syringe and a new/unopened/sterile needle it doesnt need sterilizing.... but you're prob talking about a dirty needle so ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

well, your probably right, it isn't needed, but I still do it anyway. Better safe than sorry.
I always swab with alcohol, flame the needle, and then swab with alcohol again, then inject.
Overkill? yes.....guaranteed I won't get a contam at inoculation....yes. (of course so long as the spores aren't already contammed).

Did you know the alcohol that is less strong kills more infection on the human body then more concentrated alcohol?

I've always been curious why anyone would flame a needle, and then wipe it with alcohol, as if anything could be cleaner than red hot. It would also be nice if someone could explain how wiping with alcohol can clean the inside of the needle, which to a contaminant spore is the size of the English Channel.
I suggest to flame sterilize until red hot, and then use. Save your alcohol for the jar lid/tape that you'll be injecting through, and your gloves, etc.

I use a torch to flame till its GLOWING RED..... slowly push and hear that wonderful sound of.."sizzle" see the the "spittle spattle" and some steam coming out the tip of your syringe right before the liquid drips out the tip..... Sterile baby...STERILE! Pretty sexy if you ask me.
